    CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS FOR HER

    CLOTHING & JEWELRY

C’MON MAMA Mama Bear Hat (with Baby Bear Cub!): I’m biased because these are my own C’MON MAMA hats, but they really are the BEST! And, the only Mama Bear Hat WITH a Baby Bear on it, too! Available in 2 styles—Vintage Charcoal or Denim Trucker—both with that perfect vintage look & a killer fit. You’ll never want to take it off. I might be biased, but trust me—the Mamas in your life will LOVE these hats. (the feedback from all the Mamas who have bought one is that they really ARE the best-fitting/most flattering hats ever!)

Gold MAMA Necklace or Silver MAMA Necklace: Dainty, beautiful, & says it all in just one word. I’ve worn mine for over 5 years & have taken it off maybe 10 times ever. Bonus find: This Nana necklace!

*Custom Name Bracelet: This is an A+ gift for ALL Mamas/Grandmamas. Trust me, she’ll love it. I have two—one for each kid’s name—and I love wearing them together. I also love it in gold with the white letter beads & the black letter beads. (*THIS IS A CUSTOM ITEM SO ORDER BY 11/25 FOR DELIVERY BY 12/23)

THE Pajamas: This is one of the few non-Amazon things on this list. These are a must. I have 5 pairs. They are the softest thing in the world and just so cozy. They come in a few styles, but this is my fave style because the cropped pants are perfect for all seasons & not too long or short on anyone. And they’re not sexy but yet my husband loves them on me (and my sister’s hubby feels the same about them on her!). Go figure. But I’m here for it, because they’re cozyyyy.

THE Slippers: I live in these. I have 6 pairs. (yes for real) They feel like you’re walking on clouds. And they don’t slip. They are heavenly. I think they’re equal to or even better than slippers 5x as much. They’re soft-soled, so they’re true “house” slippers, but they’re not flimsy. They’re sooooo cushy.

*If you want hard-soled slippers, check out these cozy + adorable ones.

THE Dress: This is THE most perfect dress for spring & summer. (And, you can add a denim jacket or cardigan + tights & booties to make it fall/winter-worthy.) Sometimes I add a belt, sometimes I don’t. I get endless comments when I wear this dress. It’s so cheap & yet looks beautiful on. Super flattering. The length is great & it’s easy to “Mom” in. Did I mention it has (big) pockets?! I have it in 4 designs because I love it so much (I haven’t bought it in one of the lighter colors yet, but my faves are this striped one & this black Sunflower one). **Avoid the dresses with the tiny buttons—for whatever reason they’re lesser quality than the others.

Who knew a $30 dress could be so lovely?

The Other Dress: Second fave dress on Amazon. Own it in multiple colors (cheetah, dark green, purple). Super flattering & easy to wear. *Would be a beautiful Holiday dress!

Pocket Cardigan: Lightweight & perfect for this time of year. You can bunch it up & throw it in your purse or beach bag & it’ll still look great. Long enough, super comfy, fun…and pulls any outfit together. Did I mention it has pockets?

The famous “Amazon Jacket”: It’s famous for a reason. Warm, stylish, comes in a ton of colors. Easy to wear. If you need a super warm jacket, this is a winner.

Thou Shall Not Try Me Shirt: Every time I wear this I get a zillion compliments. Every. Single. Time. Bonus = it’s super soft & fits great. Comes in a ton of colors & both short & long sleeve options. (I have the short sleeve yellow & loooove it.)

Towel Wrap: So simple, but if she doesn’t have one, get her one. She’ll use it.

The Perfect Beanie: I own this Beanie in 8 colors. I wear one almost daily in the fall/winter/early spring. They lay on your head perfectly, you can tug on the back to make them super slouchy, they look good with hair up or down. My fave colors are the classic beige & black. But they have so many fun ones.

Shearling Sandals: A total oxymoron, I know. I thought so too. In fact I kind of made fun of these in my mind when I first saw an ad for them. But then I kind of couldn’t stop thinking about them every time I couldn’t decided if I wanted to slip on my sandals or boots to run out the door. I realized these are actually perfect. So I ordered them & now I’m drinking the koolaid. I debated between the nude & the mink, and I went with the nude. *Size up if you get the narrow style. Otherwise, TTS.

iWatch Chain Band: LOVE THIS. I love wearing my iWatch. I wear it every day. And I like the “sport” band it came with. BUT, when I’m dressed up for date night or whatever reason, I swap this band in (takes all of 2 seconds) & my watch is transformed into something really pretty that goes with all my jewelry. I always get comments about it. *I also just got this leather braided wrap iWatch band & looooove it, too.

christmas gifts for her iwatch band
I love this chain band. Comfy to wear & looks so elegant & cool.

    CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS FOR HER

    BEAUTY & ACCESSORIES

Blue Light Glasses: I live in these. Because I live on the computer (well, at night & in the early mornings because I’m a Mom & my free/work time is when it’s dark outside). Do they work? Who knows, but I do think so. And, they’re stylish. I even wear them when we watch something late at night so the blue light rays don’t affect my sleep.

Wireless Ear Buds: These are amazing. Comfortable, the charge lasts forever & you can use both at once or just a single bud so you can listen to that podcast while you fold laundry & still listen out for your kids. Mom win.

Kindle Paperwhite: Give her the gift of being able to read whatever she wants without straining her eyes…and without keeping up the sleeping baby/kid/grown man next to her. My sister is an avid reader and SWEARS by hers.

Wallet: Does she need a new one? I have had this one for a couple years & love it. It’s flat so it doesn’t take up much space in my purse/diaper bag, it fits a ton, has 2 zippered cash/change compartments, & comes in a bunch of pretty/fun colors.

Full-on Cosmetic Bag: This is my go-to cosmetic organizer/travel bag. Fits everything you could possibly need & keeps it organized. It also has firm sides so it protects the contents inside.

Geometric Makeup Bag: Fun. Great size to throw in your purse.

At-Home Hair Gloss: If she has hair, she will LOVE this Olaplex gloss. It’s the same thing they use at salons, but it’s finally available for home use. Works on all colors. It’s not cheap but it lasts for months & months and makes your hair so shiny, healthy & soft.

Flowerbomb: Fave perfume 10 years & running. Enough said.

Tinted Sunscreen: This is the end-all-be-all for tinted sunscreen as far as I’m concerned. And I’ve tried a ton of different ones. I’ve even tried different Elta MD ones. This is the winner. Stays on, makes your skin look beautiful, the color isn’t orange, it doesn’t break me out, and it WORKS. My face never burns. I wear it year-round and honestly unless I’m dressing up for something, it’s the only thing I wear.

    CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS FOR HER

    AT HOME

Willow Tree MOM Figurines: I have a million of these. I adore them. (My kids love looking at them, too.) These beautiful, sweet little statues of Mothers with their child/children have many different ages & stages so you’re guaranteed to find the right one for your family.

Hinged Flower Vase: This is the most gorgeous vase I’ve ever seen. And so unique. I saw it at a friend’s house & fell in love with it. It’s expensive. But it’s also inexplicably $100 cheaper on Amazon than in stores. I bought it for myself & am so glad I did. (There is also a smaller but equally as beautiful version.)

    christmas gift ideas for her

Digital Photo Frame: Trust me on this. This is not the tacky digital frame of yore. I adore having one in my house. Why? Because it’s HARD to update framed pictures around the house. It takes time. Which is something Mamas don’t really have. It also takes a lot of effort to pick your favorite picture when you have 395873 frame-worthy ones to choose from. This solves that problem. It’s SO easy, you can send it all your fave pics to rotate through, add any whenever you’d like, and kids & people of all ages in the house LOVE looking at them. *Aura updated its photo/privacy settings & now has an easy, streamlined app that is super user-friendly. I’m a fan.

Pro tip: This also makes a killer gift for Grandmoms!! Whether they live 10 states away or 10 minutes away, I guarantee you they’ll love it. And they don’t have to do a thing to “make it work!” We gave one to both Grandmoms as their Mother’s Day gift 2 years ago. They love it & ask us all the time to send more pics.

Capri Blue Volcano Candle: My favorite candle of all time. They have a million scents but the Volcano is the classic & also the best, imo. It’s a tin container so it won’t break in transit. 2nd place: Old school Eucalyptus Spearmint Bath & Body Works fave because old habits die hard.

Essential Oil Diffuser: You don’t have to be into essential oils to love this. I diffuse the Capri Blue Volcano oil (yes, same scent as that candle above—told ya I loved it!) all the time and my home smells so fresh and light. You can use any diffuser/essential oil. And, if you’re knowledgable about EO then by all means…put this thing to werkkk!

Toiletries Spin Tower/Organizer: Didn’t think I needed this. I thought wrong. I’m obsessed with it now. It’s like a lazy susan for your bathroom. Fits all my stuff & makes everything easily accessible but also looks elegant. I’m sold.

christmas gift ideas for her toiletry tower
That sunscreen up top makes the cut, too.

Coffee Frother: If she likes coffee, she’ll love this. Sometimes I get fancy & make a latte. But mostly I just use it to stir my delicious flavored creamer into my coffee. It’s easy. And weirdly fun. *Bonus: It makes chocolate milk extra fun & bubbly for the kiddos.

Electric Tea Kettle: Stylish, functional, so practical. Anddd a perfect rating to top it off.

Electric Wine Opener: I used to always make my husband open the wine, but I actually enjoy opening it now. This thing makes it super easy. And even fun.

Wooden Utensil Set: Beautiful teak cooking utensils perfect to use with all your nonstick pans so you don’t scratch them up. Plus, they’re pretty.

Gold Mixing Bowls: These are beautiful & the lids are a game changer! Dishwasher safe & the finish stays on perfectly. So pretty she will want to leave them out on the counter. These have a ton of great reviews but it’s a new listing so the reviews got wiped. (*I have the rainbow ones because I’m extra like that since becoming a Mama.)

XL Heating Pad: Not a sexy gift, but such a functional gift. kid This one is large & plush & it saves my back.

Turkish Towel: I love these. So thin

    CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS FOR HER

    ON THE GO

Giant Tote: For groceries, for all the stuff Mamas have to lug around in the back of their car…you name it. Love mine. It folds flat so it takes up no space when not in use. *Depending on what other Christmas gifts you get her, you could use this as a giant gift bag to make it extra fun.

Laptop Bag: I ordered 4 before deciding on this one. Love it. Love the look, love the padding to protect my computer, love the pockets. *Comes in various colors & sizes to accommodate all laptops/tablets.

Swell Bottle: I have 3 of these & I use them all the time. To carry water, to carry refills for my kids, to carry coffee (because #momlife), to put my “grown up” beverages in at the drinks & pool, you name it… They keep liquid super hot or super cold for an entire day, but my very fave part is they do not leak. Like ever. So you can throw them in your purse or diaper bag & never think twice. I have two of the 17oz size & one 25oz bottle because it holds an entire bottle of wine. Not that I use it for that. Often.

YETI Cup: It doesn’t matter if you have one that she uses. Get her her own. There is a reason YETI is still tops. Their cups work and their cups last. If she doesn’t have one of her own, get her one. Mama’s coffee is alwayssss cold. Help a Mama out.

*Pro tip: Slap on the Mama + Baby Bear vinyl decal you get with my C’MON MAMA hats! It will stay on through allll the washes & make the cup a customized gift!

***The following few things are safety items because Mamas think about everyone but themselves—so we need to think about them…

Personal Alert Siren: I love having one of these with me. Super loud, easy to use. Can deter both people and animals. Whereas you have to be close to use pepper spray and tasers, the great thing about personal sirens is they are effective without having to be close to an attacker. If she feels threatened in any way, she can sound the alarm before being put in danger. *This makes a great stocking stuffer.

If you have several people in your life that could use one of these, buy this set. (I bought this for my mom/sisters/me.)

Stun Gun: I’ve carried one of these with me since I was 18.

Jumper Cables: Does she have her own set to keep in her car? No? Fix that now.

Car Escape Tool: I’ve had nightmares about getting knocked off a bridge (I live around water) & stuck under water in my car with my kids. This tool breaks the window glass & has a seat belt/car seat cutter blade. Honestly, even in a non-water emergency, I think the seat belt cutter tool is important to have—especially as tight/tricky as car seat harnesses can be.

Car Safety Kit: OR skip the separate jumper cables & car escape tool and just get this whole set. Easy, compact, has it all.

    CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS FOR HER

    STOCKING STUFFERS

Best Chapstick ever: This is one of my most Holy Grail things ever. I own 7 at any given time. Hey, you know we gotta have the house chapstick, the purse chapstick, the car chapstick, the diaper bag chapstick…(I also have the stroller chapstick, the bike chapstick, the golf cart chapstick…See? 7. Told ya.)

For neutral color & something a little more heavy duty for chapping, this one is my go-to. This is the only kind of lip color/thing I use. It’s smooth, it works, & both have a beautiful light tint. Everyone always wants to know what I wear on my lips & it’s these. (*great stocking stuffer!)

Long Phone Charger: My husband & I love these 6′ phone chargers. So we can charge them while we use them in bed. Sexy I know. But #marriedlifebelike that sometimes. *My husband prefers the 10′ now, because of course he does. Size matters? Length matters? Boys will be boys. (Get this one for Android users)

Book light: I gave this to my husband for Christmas last year. It has 3 brightness levels and both a warm & cool light option. Plus, the charge lasts forever (& it’s rechargeable).

*If you want one to travel with, get this one.

Gum: Always a good little stocking stuffer. This is my fave kind. (and hubby’s faves, too)

YUMMIEST Pretzel Sticks: Warning. These are deliciously addictive. She will have a fit over them. They LOOK incredible & they TASTE incredible. The sweet & salty = perfection. You could even split up the package of 12 & give a few to each woman in your life! Just maybe stash a couple for yourself before putting them in her stocking, because omg YUM.

*These also make an excellent gift to mail! They come so cutely packaged & you can ship straight to the recipient. Guaranteed to be a hit!

Wet Brush: She probably already has one of these. Anddd she probably needs a new one. If she’s anything like me she’s still using her original one from 8 years ago. I recently bought this fresh cute one & I have to say it felt so good to replace my worn out one.

Softest Washcloths: These are my FAVE face wash cloths. So soft, large, perfect. (Would be perfect for your body, too. I just still use loofahs because old habits die hard.)

Lovehandle: *Also available for XL phones.

O Key Ring: I LOVE MINE. Have had it for years. It’s always easy to find my keys in my bag. It’s easy to ditch the purse & carry by itself. It fits great on my arm or in my back pocket (or the waistband of my leggings, because lbh.)

#MOMLIFE Headband: That’s what I like to think of these as. I wore them pre-Momlife, but I love them more than ever now. They are great for working out, yoga, running…and running after kids. They don’t give you a headache even if you wear them for 12 hours (how is this possible?!), and they don’t slip. The come in endless cute designs. My fave are the 1″ ones.

XL Barrette Clips: These are the perfect size clips! They hold your hair back so well & look so sleek at the same time. They can be both sporty & stylish & come in colors that blend in with your hair or colors that poptake your pick. I love these & wear them almost daily since discovering them. The regular sized ones never could hold my hair back with just one, and the giant heavy ones were too much. These take the cake.

Bluetooth Speaker Soft Headband: I got this for my Mom this year, and I’m about to order myself one, too. It’s a soft headband with built-in bluetooth speakers…and a mic! Some people use it for sleeping but I got it for my Mom for when she goes on walks. An easy way to keep your hair back & listen to your fave tunes without worrying about wires or ear buds falling out. Also, I appreciate that it is not noise-blocking as that can be dangerous when walking/running/biking on a road. You need to be able to hear & this allows you to hear both your jams and surroundings.

Exercise Bands: I love these. They’re fabric instead of rubber so they stay on where you put them and they don’t roll or dig in. They come as a set of 3, with three different resistance levels. If she ever uses bands in her workout routine, get these babies.

Makeup Eraser Cloths: Magic. And this 4 pack is a fraction of the price of just one of the name brand cloths. And they work every bit as well!

Wool Dryer Balls: I used to love dryer sheets before I made the switch to dryer balls. I’m never going back. I don’t miss the dryer sheets and I feel so much better about not having all that extra stuff on my kids’ skin.

  • A Stay at Home Mom gets Everything & Nothing Done

A Stay at Home Mom gets Everything & Nothing Done

I’m a Stay at Home Mom and I love it. And I mean love it.

    I didn’t expect to.

I had no clue I’d love being home all day with my little ones. But I really, really do.

Motherhood as a whole is so many things. It’s beautiful and impossible and perfect and overwhelming and hilarious and never-ending. It’s glorious and insane all at once. It’s everything you’ve ever wanted and yet way more than you can handle.

Honestly, Motherhood is a way of life.

Stay at Home Mom with her children
    Best. Job. Ever.

And being a Stay at Home Mom?

I think it’s the best job in the whole world. Now that I know what it’s like to be present for all the daily moments with my children, I couldn’t not be there for them. I would sell everything I own to keep this job. It’s not for everyone. And that’s okay. It’s more than okay. But, it’s totally for me.

Yes, your days can sometimes feel like you’re the star of Groundhog Day. It can feel monotonous. Sometimes you feel like you’re on a hamster wheel you can’t seem to get off of but then when you finally you do get off it, you miss it.

It’s a special and unique thing to be a Stay at Home Mom. There’s much more to it than meets the eye. And ear.

Because at the end of the day—

It looks like healthy and happy kids and a still-standing house.

It sounds like “It was good, how was yours?” when your spouse asks how your day was.

But oh, there’s so much more.

A fellow Mama recently asked me, “Do you work inside or outside of the home?” BOOM. That Mama gets it. She didn’t ask me if I stayed at home. She asked me if I worked at home. I hugged her. And I almost kissed her.

I’ll yell it from the rooftops and I bet every Mother out there will yell back in agreement with me—raising & caring for children is a full-time job.

And this isn’t a debate about Stay at Home Moms or Career Moms (both are rockstars).

C'MON MAMA STAY AT HOME MOM RAISING KIDS IS A FULL TIME JOB

This is about the sheer amount of love, energy, work and patience it takes to raise children. The fact is, whether you’re staying at home and taking care of your children or you’re going to work and they’re in school or daycare, someone is taking care of them. All day long. So, I’ll say it again—it’s a full-time job.

    With overtime.

    Hours. Not pay.

And despite the insane amount of energy & effort it takes to keep these little human beings happy, healthy, thriving & growing, a funny thing happens when someone asks us this one simple question:

    “What’d you do today?”

    Huh.

That’s like the most loaded question ever.

You don’t know what to say.

But why? Why don’t you know what to say?

Why is it hard for a Stay at Home Mom to answer that?

    I’ll tell you why.

You don’t even know where to possibly begin.

Because when you’re a Stay at Home Mom, there is a strange dichotomy of feeling like you have gotten nothing done while simultaneously feeling like you are doing everything.

    C'MON MAMA SAHM phenomenon

And you’re right. On both accounts. Because while you are checking very few things off your “to do” list, you’re also keeping actual human beings alive and all the wheels in motion for whatever they need to be in motion for. So the truth is, you’re getting everything done while somehow also getting nothing done. And that’s an odd thing to come to terms with.

    “What’d you do today?”

You want to say “Everything.” You want to recount every moment & detail of work you did the entire day just to prove (mostly to yourself) how much you accomplished, but you’re way too exhausted to do that (from all that hard work, duh). You want to share every magically sweet moment and milestone, no matter how big or tiny, but there were a million and you don’t even know where to begin. And you want to say you basically achieved the impossible in taking care of all the people and all the things.

Or maybe you want to say “Nothing.” Because all you managed to do that day was reheat your coffee 11 times and hold your fussy baby, maybe it feels like you did nothing. Maybe because you let the kids watch movies all day so you could pay some bills and clean the house you feel like you weren’t on your Mom “A” game that day. Maybe because you didn’t do anything measurable it feels like you didn’t do anything important.

c'mon mama mom burnout baby passed out on chair with bottle in hand

So 99% of the time a Stay at Home Mom’s answer to “What’d you do today?” sounds something like this:

“I took care of some things.”

Or my go-to: “I TCB’d.” [Took Care of Business]

And God forbid, sometimes you might even answer: “Not much.”

    BUT THAT IS A LIE.

Because that’s not the full story. That’s not even like the Epilogue of the story. That’s more like one sentence in a 37,682 page book.

“Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” Well guess what?

You can’t judge a Stay at Home Mom’s day by it’s cover either.

Because what it looks like and what it sounds like don’t give even close to the full story. And honestly, unless you’re living it, even hearing all the details of the day is still just the Cliff Notes version.

It looks like children who are okay and a home that is miraculously in one piece.

It sounds like “I ran some errands & got some things done I’ve been trying to do.”

    But here’s what a Stay at Home Mom’s day—and life—really is:

It’s waking up as your Supermom alter ego and turning that fierce & loving Mama spirit all the way up when you hear that first peep from your child. No matter the time.

It’s protecting little humans that realistically spend a good portion of every day actively testing the boundaries of life and death and doing 117 things an hour that are guaranteed to end in a booboo.

And then it’s kissing and “fixing” those booboos that you saw coming 20 miles away.

It’s keeping little (and big) tummies fed and full and happy.

It’s trying your damndest to sort out fads from real nutrition and buy the healthiest stuff possible for your kids. Feeding them and feeding you probably looks totally different. I’ll snack on Combos from the gas station any day of the week, but you better believe my kids are eating Annie’s snacks because I feel like those are healthier and if you mom-shame me or tell me they aren’t I’m going to cry right here right now because I’ve been buying that stuff for 6 years.

It’s being “on call” all day, every day, for the rest of your life. Just like physicians get calls around the clock from their patients when they’re on call, the same goes for Mamas. Our children can (and will) call on us anytime of day or night and we will answer and be there for them. (BTW, my husband is a surgeon and in 6 years of Motherhood I’ve totally gotten more middle-of-the-night calls than he has.)

    It’s laundry.

    C'MON MAMA SAHM LAUNDRY

And the irony of this never-ending pile of laundry is that your own clothes make up the smallest portion of it. Your spouse & kids are the real culprits. Probably because you wear the same thing most days. (Just me? Cool.)

It’s also knowing which clothes need to be hung & which ones can go straight in the dryer & which ones have stains you’re working on. I bet no one else in your house knows how to sort it correctly. I’m not Type A, you are. (Actually I’m not Type A anymore—that is one thing Motherhood has definitely changed about me—but that is for another post.)

It’s tickle fights and sword fights and playing chase and hide-and-seek and building towers and acting out stories and drawing masterpieces. It’s whatever those tiny minds and bodies need.

It’s keeping up with everything in the history of the world. Dates for kid stuff, dates for adult stuff, dates for family stuff, and dates for stuff that has nothing to do with you but everybody still gives to you to keep up with. Moms are like universal human calendars that update constantly and sync to everyone else.

It’s getting to be there for all the moments. When someone says, “I wish I was there for that” you smile because you were there for it. And that feels amazing.

It’s being a referee in the background of every single activity every single day if you have more than one child.

C'MON MAMA STAY AT HOME MOM LAUNDRY LASTS FOREVER

It’s keeping tabs on what food you’re out of, what food you’re almost out of, and what food is about to go bad so you need to eat it first.

It’s braving the grocery store. And then putting all those groceries away. And doing the stuff Moms know to do, like washing the fruit.

It’s listening—to the chaos and the silence. Because seasoned Mamas know that silence is not always golden and sometimes chaos is the sweetest sound.

It’s changing out the coffee pot carbon filters that no one else even knows exist. (I love coffee, obvi.)

It’s making your children feel like they are the most important and special thing in the world as often as possible. Because they are, no question, but making them feel that way is the important part.

It’s remembering the dog’s birthday & being a Dog Mom, too.

    It’s potty-training.

It’s some of your biggest fails and biggest successes in succession day after day…after day after day.

It’s answering questions from the mind of an inquisitive child every other second. The most popular question is “Why?” followed closely by “But why?”

C'MON MAMA THE MAMA LISA kids say mom watch this a million times

It’s not losing your patience when you can’t seem to put the “Why?” question fire out.

It’s sensing when Grandma would benefit from a loved up FaceTime call with the kids.

It’s balancing outdoor fresh air time and indoor cozy time.

It’s weighing the guilt and sanity that comes with too much screentime.

It’s knowing what time you need to do every single thing to make it in time for nap and bed time.

It’s getting to be the recipient of the best love in the world because you’re the one with them. This is my favorite part of being a SAHM.

It’s noticing your child’s nails are too long and sharp and trimming them.

And it’s knowing when you need to Q-tip those tiny ears of theirs. (I know some people don’t believe in Q-tips because wax can be protective, but I am not one of those people. RIP wax.)

It’s knowing when the sheets need to be changed. Not just on your own bed, but on the kids’ beds.

It’s not getting to take a sick day when you’re, well, sick…and it’s taking care of everyone else on theirs.

It’s appreciating the perfect imperfectness of it all.

And it’s being okay with messy and real—in your life and in your home. And perhaps even embracing it—right down to your child’s sticky handprints.

It’s soothing little souls throughout the day when this great big world is just a bit too much for them.

It’s paying attention to which toys your children still play with and which ones they haven’t touched in months.

Then it’s stealthily getting those toys out of the house and to Goodwill without your kids noticing because it’s 100% guaranteed that if they see that toy in your hand they will desperately have to keep it even though it’s been sitting in front of them every day for ages & they haven’t touched it once.

Stay at Home Mom snuggling sick child
There’s only one good thing that ever comes out of a sick child: The Snuggles.

It’s understanding when your babies need discipline and when they need a little extra love.

It’s loading & unloading the dishwasher continuously. Forever and ever. The End.

It’s knowing the bottle and sippy cup parts need to dry fully before putting them back together.

It’s somehow magically understanding that adorable toddler talk when it seems no one else in the world can.

It’s noticing when they’ve outgrown something and mentally noting when they’ve almost outgrown something.

It’s making your child feel like they have your complete, undivided attention when your mind is in a million different directions. You feel that scattered mind of yours but you try your hardest to make sure they don’t.

It’s never truly having a day or night off. Because let’s be honest, even if you are away from your children, they’re always still on your mind. Someone should warn us that once you become a parent you have your own personal cloud flurry of worry (cue Olaf) for your precious babies at all times.

It’s juggling the absolute sweetest moments of your life with some of the toughest ones.

It’s knowing that the “days are long but the years are short” are the truest words ever spoken. And embracing that.

It’s being a teacher who is expected to be an expert in every subject under the sun from Language to Math to History to Humanity to Etiquette to PE to Reading to Home Ec. to Arts & Crafts.

Stay at Home Mom's kids learning at home
    School is in session.

And let’s not forget you’re also the cafeteria lady.

    Oh. And the cook, too.

It’s a cycle of laughs and hugs and tantrums and kisses and pouts and holding your ground and raising the white flag that repeats all day long.

It’s the love. Oh, it’s the love.

Stay at Home Mom in Super Mom costume
Sometimes I feel like Super Mom. Sometimes I don’t.

Being a Stay at Home Mom is literally being everything and everyone to everything and everyone.

    It’s being all-knowing. And all-doing. It’s basically being a Superhero.

But let’s be real—that’s a lot to tell someone in response to a 4 word question. So you don’t. But maybe sometimes it’s okay if you do. Maybe sometimes it’s okay to talk about all the Stay at Home Mom badassery you’re doing.

I didn’t know I’d want to be a SAHM. I didn’t know I’d love being a SAHM. But now I know how lucky I am to be a Stay at Home Mom.

And other Moms feel the same way.

I wouldn’t trade my Stay at Home Mom status or super powers for anything in the world…even though it can be completely exhausting.

    But you know what?

I’m sure even Wonder Woman would be beat after a day as a Stay at Home Mom.

    And I know Superman would.

  • I was a Dog Mom First (And yes, that counts)

I was a Dog Mom First (And yes, that counts)

Long before my children made me a Mother, I was a Dog Mom.

It was a 13 year love story. His name was Hershey Bear.

It’s true what they say about never getting over your first love. Mine was a dog, and yes, he made me a Mom.

I had more loves-of-my-life make their way into the picture over those 13 years, including my husband and my children. But nothing and no one changed my love for Hershey.

13 years is a long time. But it wasn’t anywhere near long enough.

    I miss him something fierce.

We were partners in all of what life threw at us. The joys, the heartbreaks, the new loves & additions, the losses, the sicknesses, the happiest moments—all of it. We shared knowing looks & side-eye glances. We walked together when one of us wanted to walk; we ran when one of us wanted to run. And when he became weak & needed to be carried, my love for him helped me become superhuman & lift my 100lb “little” boy up. He would’ve done the same.

I was a Dog Mom. He was my Boy. And I was his Mom.

DOG MOM fur mama adventures with fur baby2

The really unique thing about a dog (and maybe any super special pet), is that they can be the love of your life, your baby, and your best friend all rolled into one.

    That was Hershey.

I was Dog’s Best Friend. He was Girl’s Best Friend. I was Dog Mom. He was my little (big) boy.

I was his. And he was mine.

If you’ve been a Dog Mom then you know how real that love is.

I’m a “real” Mom now. I have a son and a daughter. Yes, it’s different than being a Fur Mama.

Of course it is. Of course being a Mom to my children is different than being a Dog Mom. But, in so many ways, it’s the same.

Hershey was my child. He was Man of Honor at my wedding. He walked down the aisle. I tucked him in every single night for 13 years unless I was out of town. I loved him goodbye every time I left the house. If I forgot I’d literally reverse back down the street to run in & tell him bye.

My family and friends have always laughed about how crazy much I loved him. My husband often joked he didn’t know who I loved more. (He might’ve been only halfway joking. 🤨)

Hershey was with me every single step of the way for 13 years. My love for him was so real and consuming.

As silly as it sounds, one of my worries about having children was that I would have less time with him. Less time to spend with him, and less time to spend on him.

He was right there with me when I went from being a Dog Mom to a Mom Mom.

FUR BABY WAS PART OF OUR BABY ANNOUNCEMENTS SINCE I'M A DOG MOM
Of course our fur babies were part of our Baby Announcements. Because FAMILY.

He was gentle & patient with my first-born. My new little boy. He was easy & kind with my tiny baby despite being a behemoth of a dog. He never acted threatened, and if he acted anything less than perfect, I’d say “Hersheyyy” in that tone Moms have…& he’d listen. (Now that I have a 3 & 5 year old, I can confidently say I think dogs are better listeners.)

DOG MOM human kids with fur baby

Two years later came my daughter. Shortly after she was born, we found lymphoma in Hershey. We fought for him—with him—and he fought, too. Hard. I’d take him to Firehouse Subs after chemo treatments. I made him a room in the garage when he was too weak to go up & down the stairs. I even put our extra baby monitor down there so I could monitor him at night. The monitor would scan both of my kids’ rooms & then Hershey’s room.

    See? Dog Mom.

At night after we put our kids down, I’d lie down there with him. It would feel so good just to pet & hold him in the quiet without the chaos of family life with 2 toddlers. To remind him that I was still there & it was still us. While my little babies were safely tucked in their beds, my big baby was safely tucked in my arms. His Mama’s arms. ❤️🐾

As his health got worse, I’d retreat down there & stay longer. Sometimes I’d talk to him about life & my new babies & Motherhood. Other times I’d just snuggle him in silence. I told myself I was doing it for him, but the truth is it was probably just as much for me. He’d been the constant in my life well before I ever started a family of my own, and I think being with him was comforting & reassuring for me, too.

dog mom first whenever i needed a hand(1)

It’s not fair that our dogs don’t get to stay here as long as us. They are nothing but love and they deserve longer.

And it’s not fair that we don’t get to be Dog Moms longer. It’s a beautiful bond that could last a lifetime if given the chance.

I say all the time how I’d freeze my children forever right now if I could. They love me so much at this point in their little lives. I’m their whole world. Time goes too fast. I do think the days are long but the years are short. I wish I could stop time.

I also felt that way with Hershey, but for different reasons.

It hurt me to see him changing & aging right in front of me. I wanted time to stop. I wanted to have longer with him.

It was difficult watching him get older, wondering if he was okay, if he ached, if I was doing everything right, and if he felt loved enough. He was down a spleen & battling lymphoma like a soldier. He had terrible arthritis because of those long legs of his. And he had severe hip dysplasia.

DOG MOM'S FUR BABY PAW PRINTS IN THE RAIN
    These paw prints were everything.

It was hard to see him hurt.

As he got older, he struggled. Physically he became weaker, but his spirit only grew stronger.

Just like I kind of love the sticky little child handprints my kids leave all over the house, I loved Hershey’s paw prints. When I’d come home & see his wet or dirty paw prints on the floor, I’d be so touched. Because I knew the effort it took to get those prints there. The amount of will & strength it took my 100lb boy to get up & walk outside for a brief minute of fresh air before retreating back to his bed.

Years back I’d started taking him to therapeutic swimming to give his joints some relief. For over a decade, I’d saved my money to pay his vet bills, for all his bloodwork & medicine, to get him the right kind of food for his joints, and for the clencher—chemo. When I sold my Wrangler before having kids so I could get something safer, I was looking for two things—a comfortable, safe car for kids and a cargo area big enough for Hershey. (Oh, and heated seats, obvi.)

You know who does stuff like that? A Dog Mom.

DOG MOM fur mama laying with fur baby
We even started to look alike.

I was fortunate enough to be able to do all that for him. I know that’s not always possible. I’m extremely grateful to have had such a loving husband who never questioned any decision I made regarding my first little boy. He never made me feel like Hershey was “just a dog.”

Because our dogs aren’t “just dogs.” And we aren’t “just owners.”

My dog is the one who made me a Mama all those years ago. He will always be the one who made me a Mama. A Fur Mama.

Nothing—no amount of time or space or human kids—can change that.

Once a Mom, always a Mom. Even a Dog Mom.

    Make no mistake about that.

  • Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist (what to pack!)

Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist (what to pack!)

This Hospital Bag Checklist is a one stop shop for everything you need when you walk in those hospital doors a Mom-to-Be…and walk out a Mom.

Wow. Just think about that. Whether it’s your first child or your fifth, there is something mind-blowing about walking in by yourself (or with your spouse, of course), and walking out with your new baby in tow. It’s incredible.

And you have probably spent the past several months nesting & getting everything under the sun ready for your baby on the way. But now, shift gears to you for a second & get your hospital bag knocked out. Because there are enough things out of your control right now (hellooo, body).

Your hospital bag & what to pack for labor is one thing you can control.

And have ready. In advance. For when you feel those contractions start (or if you’re like me, you feel that water break….btw, it’s nothing like it looks in the movies!).

So here it is: the Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist.

(I also offer this checklist as a free printable download at the bottom! Don’t miss it!)

It’s got what you need to pack for you, for baby, and for your spouse because even though they’re not doing the hard job you will be, they get inexplicably starving. Go figure.

Side note: I also have an Ultimate Baby Registry Guide that you don’t want to miss!

hospital bag checklist leaving for hospital
The shirt I wore to the hospital was very fitting if I don’t say so myself.

    Hospital Bag Checklist

    Hospital Bag Checklist—for Baby:

    • Car seat in the car (bonus points: practice with your car seat & a stuffed animal in advance. My husband & I truly couldn’t figure out our car seat when we first put our son in. The straps were way too tight & we didn’t know how to adjust them yet so our momentous leaving the hospital moment was delayed by car seat technicalities.)
    • Blanket you want to be the special baby blanket
    • A couple extra swaddle blankets
    • A couple outfits for baby: Outfit you want to be the “first” outfit and the one you want to be the “going home” outfit. Don’t forget little socks/booties to keep those newborn feet warm.
    • Hat/Bow: If there is a special hat or bow you want on your little one, don’t forget it! The hospital hat they provide is a total classic so I wouldn’t forego it, but you may want to bring a couple of your own, too. For my little girl, I loved this “girly” hospital hat because it matched the one the hospital gave my son when he was born.
    hospital bag checklist baby clothes
Love the “girly” hat in the matching classic hospital pattern.
    • Diaper bag (if you still need one this one is my fave)
    • Nursing cover:  I actually only ever used swaddle blankets because I found them so much easier than a true nursing cover, plus I always had them with me.
    • Burp cloth
    • Baby book for footprints: If you bring a book with you they will stamp your baby’s footprints right in it, which is so much easier than doing it yourself later. These are my top 3 picks, in no order: Pick 1, Pick 2, Pick 3
    • Bassinet: This is 50/50. I did take my rock n play (yes, the now recalled one) for my second baby to sleep in & I’m glad I did. But, I only took it because it’s so compact and foldable. I don’t think I would take anything large, you just don’t need anything extra to worry about.
    • Pro Tip: Check with your hospital to see if they offer a photography service. At most hospitals there is a company that comes around to the rooms & takes newborn & family pics. DO IT. I know you may think it’s the last thing you want to do, but trust me—these are such beautiful, natural, special (& not to mention easy!) pictures & you do not want to miss the chance. The rates are usually great, they use the natural light in the room & you don’t have to “dress up.” I wore no makeup and just looked down at my baby & they are some of my favorite pics of my little family. See below picture.

mom holding newborn hospital bag checklist

    • If you are doing any kind of cord blood banking, don’t forget the kit.

    Hospital Bag Checklist—for Mama:

    • Chapstick—OMG this. I have no idea why your lips get sooooo unbelievably dry during childbirth but they do. Be prepared.
    • Extra hair ties & little clips to hold your hair out of your face
    • Clothes: Warm cozy socks, slippers (these are my fave but you can also get cheapo ones you can toss after), bathrobe (so easy to slip on!), nightgown or comfy pjs (with buttons for nursing!) or nursing tank, underwear, yoga/sweatpants, slip on sandals/shower sandals.
      • Pro tip 1: Pack dark items, at least for your pants. Trust me. Nothing to scare you but there is definitely some bleeding & there are definitely some monstrous pads, so just go dark on the bottom half so you don’t have to worry about a thing. Also you need granny panties. Leave the cheeky cut at home. (Don’t worry, you’ll bring them back one day. Promise.)
      • Pro tip 2: Bring either high-waisted comfy pants or a gown/tunic/dress for C-section Mamas, because the lower rise ones will sit right on the cut. (& you may end up having an unplanned C-section)
    • Nursing bra
    • Breastfeeding Pump: If you plan to breastfeed, bring your pump with you to the hospital. Leave it in the car because your family can bring it in for you when/if you’re ready for it (you may not need it). The lactation consultant can help you learn to use it if necessary, too.
    • Breastfeeding Pillow: It can be very helpful to have this in the hospital when you are learning how to breastfeed. (This is my fave nursing pillow). Again, you can leave this in the car until you need it. I loved having mine there.
    • Cooling pads & nipple cream: bring them. When you first start nursing, it can hurt/sting. The relief from cooling pads & nipple cream is glorious.
    • Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wash, moisturizer, brush, perfume/body spray. If you think you might shower then bring a hair dryer/straightener/curler if you want. (I took a shower/washed my hair right when I went into labor both times so I didn’t need to wash my hair in the hospital.) Dry shampoo FTW.
      • Also, you may want to bring your own XL pads. The hospital ones are monstrous but they work. (Either way stock up on these for when you are home).
    • Makeup bag: As bare bones or full throttle as you want.
    • Nice roll of TP. Sounds silly I know, but that hospital 1-ply isn’t stellar.
    • Your own blanket & pillow. I used what they had but this would’ve been nice.
    • Miscellaneous/important Items: Credit card/checkbook, cash & change (for vending machines!), Driver’s License, insurance card, social security card, pediatrician’s info
    • Electronics: Surge protector so you have enough outlets, long phone chargers (or extension cord) for both (bring one for you & your spouse, trust me you will both want to charge your phones for all the pics you’re about to take of the new baby you’ll be instantly obsessed with), bluetooth speaker if you want to listen to any music
    • Camera or lbh—enough room on your phone. Seriously, make room for pics now.
    • FOOD/DRINKS: All caps because this one is important. Pack snacks (& lots of them!), water, gatorade, candy, gum & mints. I brought a whole basket & we ate & drink every bit. You can’t eat when you’re in active labor but you will be STARVED and PARCHED immediately after. I seriously asked for a pop tart as I cradled my 5 minute-old newborn. And then my mouth was too dry to swallow it. But I was famished. And like I said before, for some reason you being labor makes your spouse the hungriest human alive. My husband munched (stress ate?) the whole time. Also, real talk: you might want to pack a straw or two in case the hospital doesn’t give the big straw cup I mention below.
    • Battery operated fan: Several Mamas said this was a lifesaver for them because they always get hot.
    • Sound Machine: Several moms also suggested bringing a sound machine to drown out all the noises–for you and baby. I didn’t think of this but I can see the appeal. This is my go-to sound machine & this is my go-to portable one. (I also got a few suggestions for ear plugs for spouse, but real talk I was kind of in the “we’re in this together” mindset so not sure about the earplugs, ha!)

    hospital bag checklist family

    Hospital Bag Checklist—for Spouse:

    • Phone charger (yes I already mentioned it, but trust me you each need one)
    • Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant
    • Clothes: Sweatshirt (hospitals get cold), change of clothes, clothes for pictures if they want to wear something different (my husband just wore a dark shirt & it looked great)
    • Glasses/contacts if needed
    • Sleeping supplies: Good pillow & blanket(s). They will be sleeping on that couch/chair thing so anything to make them comfortable
    • Note pad & pen to take notes (or they can use their phone, but sometimes it is helpful to have things written down for other family members to help keep up with)

    dad holding newborn baby

    Hospital Bag Checklist—for actual LABOR:

    • Birth plan: You don’t have to actually print one out unless you want to, but just make sure you discuss it 1) with your spouse or whoever is going to be in the room with you and 2) with your nurse/doctor after arriving & getting going. (Things like: are you getting an epidural? are you okay with pitocin? BUT also keep in mind that things sometimes don’t go according to plan at all. And, that’s okay. I had an epidural with my first and a totally natural labor with my second…only because my epidural fell out immediately & no one noticed until it was too late. I was okay both times, and so were my babies. Have a plan of what you want but also know that you will likely need to roll with the flow, too. For a more general birth plan example, click here and for a very detailed birth plan checklist, click here.)
    • Focal point: A picture to look at if you want a photo to be your focus point. I had one with both labors and honestly it did help me to look at. I just printed an 8×10 and taped it on the wall.
    • Bluetooth speaker if you want music.
    • Essential oils/diffuser if that’s your jam.
    • Labor props: If you want any of the labor “props” that might not be provided by the hospital, bring ’em.

    Hospital Bag Checklist—for AFTER Labor:

    • Get all the help & advice you possibly can from the nurses & doctors! They know what they’re doing. Let them teach you their swaddling mastery. Ask them what to do about things. Get their tips.
    • Ask for a lactation consultant: Even if you don’t think you need one, ask for one to come to your room. The amount of help they can offer you is invaluable. They will help make sure your baby is latching correctly & help you understand what that latch is supposed to look & feel like. I wouldn’t leave the hospital without meeting with the lactation consultant if you are planning to breastfeed.
    • Take any & everything the hospital gives you! Keep all the pads! All the ice packs! All the numbing spray! Squirt bottles! Diapers! Wipes! And definitely keep the giant water cup with the big straw because breastfeeding makes your thirst never-ending & that big water cup went all over the house with me the first couple months! (And I totallyyy did ask for extra cold packs & I’m so glad I did. If you know, you know. And if you don’t know, you will.)

mother and father with newborn baby hospital bag checklist

A couple last Hospital Bag hacks:

    • Pack in a rolling suitcase! It is SO much easier than trying to have one person strap everything across them & carry multiple heavy bags. I’d take 1-2 rolling suitcases over duffel bags any day.
    • Bring a big foldable/compact extra bag (or 2!) for gifts & all the things you “steal” above. It just makes it so much easier to get everything out to the car when you leave.
    • I brought a huge jar of Hershey’s kisses for the nurses and man did they love it. The nurses are your A-team, trust me on this. Individually wrapped candy goes a long way.
    • Don’t be in such a rush to leave. I know being in the hospital isn’t the most comfortable thing in the world. But, the flip side of that is that you have a lot of help when you’re there. Leave when you’re ready but also, take your time.

  • Others have worn masks daily for years. Now it’s our turn.

Others have worn masks daily for years. Now it’s our turn.

This is my husband. He’s a surgeon. He constantly wears a mask for work. And has for 15+ years.

Why does he wear it? To protect his patients. To protect their opened up organs & wounds from droplets, coughs, sneezes, and general contamination.

In fact, every single person in the OR wears one for the very same reason. For us—the patients.

And if he’s operating on you, I’d be willing to bet you want him wearing that mask. You wouldn’t want him to cough into your body & cause an infection. Would you?

He wears masks for 12+ hours straight some days, only taking one off to put on another.

Before you say it, yes—the mask is also to protect him from any body fluids getting into his orifices. When he’s actively operating he wears goggles, too. And as his wife, you bet I want him to. Of course I want him to protect himself as much as possible.

He is just one of millions of people who wear masks for their job every single day.

Nurses, techs, construction workers, dentists, nail techs, hygienists, lawn care workers, janitors, painters, food servers, carpenters, exterminators, lab staff…to name a few. I’m sure I forgot many.

All those people aren’t wearing masks for no reason. They’re wearing them because masks offer some form of protection from whatever it is they may be doing—or whoever it is they may be seeing.

So when we rebuff masks as not effective, think about sitting in the dentist chair & having them breathe all over you.

When we argue that masks don’t protect the other person, think about having your body splayed open & your surgeon asking for an instrument & speech droplets falling right over that cut.

When we counter that masks don’t protect us, think of the person removing the asbestos or black mold from your house. Heck, even the painter wearing a mask to help shield the fumes.

And when we complain that we can’t breathe after wearing a mask for 2 minutes, think of the person in the blazing sun all day doing manual labor while wearing a mask.

And if it’s too hard to generalize things and you need a face to think of—you can think of my husband. That’s his daily masked-up face up there.

He’s not some kind of martyr for wearing a mask. He’s just doing exactly what he should. Just like all those others.

And the stance that wearing a mask increases CO2 intake to dangerous levels? Well 1st) that’s wildly inaccurate and 2nd) even if that were true (it’s not), maybe ask why it’s okay to let people in all these professions wear masks for hours daily? For years. Since people are suddenly so impassioned about it now, where has this mask activism been for others all these years?

Basically, we just need to think of others. That’s really what this all boils down to.

I mean, I’m thinking of myself, too—don’t get me wrong. And when I put masks on my kids I’m thinking about protecting them.

But for those people who don’t think masks provide any protection during this pandemic & don’t want to wear a mask to protect themselves, don’t. Wear it to protect the others.

We should think of the ones who have always worn a mask for us. And the ones who are putting on a mask now for the first time in their lives.

    For us & for themselves.

And for the record, I do believe that wearing a mask during this pandemic helps protect everyone & curb the spread of Covid. But, I realize I’m not a physician or a scientist. I’m not aggregating and analyzing the data as it comes in. Are you?

So instead I base my decision to wear a mask on the fact that if there is even the teeniest, tiniest possibility that wearing a mask helps limit the spread of Covid and protect ourselves and others, that’s enough for me.

Because if those of us wearing masks are wrong, what’s the worst that happened? We wore a piece of fabric on our face for a few months?

But if those of us not wearing masks are wrong, what’s the worst that happened? We spread this virus & contributed to exponential infections?

I’ll take the fabric over the guilt.

No I don’t normally write about stuff like this, but nothing about any of this is normal. Now back to regular programming…

I usually talk about Motherhood > Are you a SAHM? Have you yelled at your kids? (I did & what happened after shocked me) Are you a Mom raising a black son?

  • “The Days are Long but the Years are Short” shouldn’t Bother You

“The Days are Long but the Years are Short” shouldn’t Bother You

Mamas, I know you’re tired of hearing “The days are long but the years are short” from everyone you encounter.

    And their Mamas.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard another Mama say “If another person tells me ‘the days are long but the years are short’ I’m gonna…”

    And I get it.

    Kind of.

    But not really.

I mean, I know that you’re tired of hearing it, but I don’t really know why.

    Maybe because You. Are. Trying.

the days are long but the years are short, never enough time

Trying so hard to keep it all together & make everything happen that needs to happen while still relishing all the MOMents & giving your children Quality Time (the real QT where you’re present with them & not in the background doing all the things for all the people all the time).

But Mamas, hear me out, because here’s the thing:

“The days are long but the years are short” is not meant to pressure you.

I repeat: It’s not meant to pressure you.

Those other Mamas who have some years on us tell us that “the days are long but the years are short” on repeat for one reason: BECAUSE. IT’S. TRUE.

They’ve lived what we’re currently living. They’ve been in our shoes. Actually, we’re in their shoes and not the other way around.

They’ve walked this walk. They were here first. They know how quickly it goes.

They’ve walked the walk. So they are allowed to talk the talk.

They know that the days can be some of the longest of your life. And hardest. And defeating.

But they also know that you’ll look back on these days and lust for them.

I know what you’re thinking. That you won’t lust for the meltdowns. You won’t miss the tantrums. You won’t yearn for the exasperated feeling you sometimes have now.

    Ne neither.

C'MON MAMA the days are long but the years are short leaving restaurant with kids dinner fail
No, you probably won’t miss the days of leaving the restaurant like this. Or maybe you’ll look back & laugh your a** off. And when you witness another family retreating home like this, you might–dare I say it?!–tell them “the days are long but the years are short.”

Of course you don’t have to enjoy every second of Motherhood. That’s not what they’re saying. They’re simply saying that it goes fast and you’ll miss it. Yes, even some of the things you don’t think you’ll miss.

When another Mother tells you “The days are long but the years are short,” she’s saying it out of empathy. She’s not telling you to enjoy every minute. She’s simply telling you to enjoy it. That’s a big difference.

    Those Mamas know.

They know the years fly by at light speed and one day you’ll find yourself practically begging your kids to need you like they once did. Or even just talk to you. Hell, even just hug you.

They know how quickly you will go from being your kid’s entire world to just a piece of it. Hopefully like a continent-sized piece. But sometimes you might end up being more like a country. Or a state. Or, gulp, a city.

And they know how much they wish they had sometimes just set the cleaning aside or microwaved Mac & Chz instead of really cooking (lbh, me most days anyway 🙋🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️) or not done the laundry or unloaded the dishwasher that very second AND JUST SAT DOWN with their kids.

Just sitting down with your kids is underrated. Or just playing with them. You should try it sometime. And so should I.

The days are long—so long—because we spend our days doing everything we possibly can to take care of our kids (hellooo mom burnout). But the irony of that is that even though we spend all our time on them, it means we often spend less time with them.

But I hear you. Sometimes we can’t just sit down. Sometimes we really do have to do stuff right then. That’s real life. And you’re right.

But sometimes we can. Yes it might add on 30 minutes at the end of the day when we’re already barely functioning, but sometimes it’s worth that. Sometimes 30 minutes of snuggling with your children is worth 30 minutes of folding the laundry after bedtime. Or 30 less minutes with your husband. Or 30 less minutes to yourself. And some days it’s not worth it, and you know what? That’s okay. It’s more than okay. But maybe some days it’s so worth it.

“The days are long and the years are short” is one of the most accurate things I’ve ever heard in my entire life.

Hammer. Nail. Head. (…you get my point.)

So I honestly don’t know why so many of us Mamas get bothered when people say that to us…and even resent it. They’re not mom-shaming us. They’re not patronizing us (unless her name is Becky or Janet and then chances are she might be because those 2 seem to be the ubiquitous Meme Mean Moms. Sigh, poor nice Beckies & Janets.).

    becky janet debbie karen meme

Those other Mamas aren’t judging you. They’re simply telling us what they wish someone had told them. Or maybe what someone did tell them…but they didn’t listen. (Hello, us.)

And they wish they had. They wish they had listened.

I don’t get annoyed when another Mama tells me “the days are long and the years are short.” Or when I read it on a quote making its way all over the internet. Instead, I feel a little solidarity like“Hell yeah, she gets it.”

Fist bumps all around. Or high-fives. Or hugs. (Depending on my mood and current emotional state, ha.)

I actually even appreciate when someone says it to me because it makes me pause—even if just for a second—and can shift my entire perspective.

It slows me down. I need that. You wouldn’t think a Mother needs little reminders to stop & just be with her own children sometimes. But I’ll be the first to admit that I do.

When someone does say the whole “The days are long but the years are short” thing we shouldn’t feel defensive. It’s not supposed to put pressure on us. Just the opposite actually.

It’s basically saying—Enjoy your kids. Give yourself a break & sit down for a minute & do nothing with your kids—for them AND FOR YOU.

Oh, and it’s also saying that the laundry & dust & dishes & bills will always be there…but your kids won’t.

I saw a quote somewhere that said we only get “18 delicious summers with our children” at home. That’s so not a lot.

Or that we only have a baby for a year, a toddler for 2 years, a kid for a few years, a teen…you get the point.

Those things stopped me in me tracks. But they didn’t make me feel pressured or attacked. They made me feel grateful for the reminders.

days are long years are short mom with baby and mom with child
5 years felt like 5 seconds.

A lot of my fellow Mamas don’t agree with me about that. A bunch of you feel really offended or pressured when someone says something like that.

But noting that we have “18 delicious summers” with our kids at home isn’t intended to make us feel pressured to make every single moment of summer perfect. (And if we’re being honest, some of the best summer days are watching TV in pajamas all day because it’s just too hot outside. And I bet our kids think days like that are pretty damn perfect.)

I’m only 5.5 years into Motherhood and it’s already going too fast for me.

Is it so hard some days (ahem, every day)? YES.

And is it my favorite thing in the history of the world? ALSO YES.

“The days are too long and the years are too short” is maybe even more fitting. Because at the end of the day I’m beat to total Mombie Status & yet I already want more time with them.

It’s like that crazy thing about Motherhood where you can’t wait to put them to bed and as soon as you do…you miss them.

    That’s insane, I know.

But Motherhood is a little insane. In the most beautiful way.

When a Mother tells you “The days are long and the years are short” try to hear her words.

And not get defensive or go on the offensive.

Because she’s not trying to pressure you. But she’s also not lying about the fact that your child won’t want you to hold them to sleep in a few years. It’s hard to imagine that because right now it’s almost Mission:Impossible to put your kids to bed in under an hour. But they know one day “Mama, I’m thirsty. Mommy, I need to go potty. Mama can we read another book? Will you hold me, Mommy? Mama, is a T-Rex bigger than a blue whale? But WHY? …..Mama, will you stay a little longer?” will morph into a simple “Good night, Mom.” (*I’m not crying you’re crying.)

    *Okay, I’m full-on sobbing.

And if we’re lucky we’ll get an “I love you.”

the days are long but the years are short, mom snuggling child

As I laid in bed with my son for the longest bedtime ever the other night, I wished so much for him to hurry up and fall asleep so I could leave. As I thought about how I’d been in there forever and wanted to go do some of my own stuff he piped up, “Mama?” I pretended to be asleep. So he said it 2 more times. I finally answered “Yeah honey?”

He said “I’m SO happy. I’m just so happy because I love you.” Followed by the sweetest squeeze.

It hit me like a ton of bricks.

For 25 minutes I’d been lying there thinking about how I wanted to escape to my room and about all the things I wanted to get done the next day, and he’d been lying there thinking about how happy he was that I was holding him and how much he loved me.

It wasn’t even like a shot of perspective. It was like a full-on IV drip straight to my veins.

They’ll tell you the days are long but the years are short. They’ll say that because it’s true. And you might feel affronted. But you shouldn’t.

You should take it with a heaping cup of salt. Because they’re right. And what they’re saying matters.

It’s basically advice from your future self. And your future self is right.

    So soak it in.

Their words. Your children. Motherhood. All of it.

Because the days are long but the years are short.

    That’s right. I said it.

Because I believe it. Boom. 💥

the days are long but the years are short so don't blink, babies and kids running up stairs
    Don’t blink.

Does it bother you when someone tells you “The days are long but the years are short” or does it give you a little perspective?

  • Dear Moms Raising Black Sons, I can’t Imagine. (because I don’t have to)

Dear Moms Raising Black Sons, I can’t Imagine. (because I don’t have to)

    Dear Moms Raising Black Sons,

I’m a white mom raising a white son. I worry about him constantly. Because that’s what Moms do. I think about his safety, his health, and his happiness on repeat all day every day. Just like you.

All Moms worry. Well, good ones anyways. It’s one of the things no one really tells you about Motherhood: how much you’ll worry.

    (Spoiler alert: A LOT.)

My son is young, so my worries for him now are about whether I make him feel loved enough, keeping him healthy, raising him to be kind & confident, and keeping him safe. The same worries every Mother has for her child.

As he gets older, I’ll worry about my son falling in with the wrong group of friends. Or getting made fun of or bullied. Or trying something he shouldn’t. I’ll worry about him being careless with his life.

In those ways, as Mothers, all our worries are the same.

But in other ways, they couldn’t be more different.

My worries for my white son will be the same as some of your worries for your black son.

But where my worries end, a terrifying set of worries begins for Moms raising black sons.

    Worries I can’t imagine. Because I won’t have to.

Worries you shouldn’t have to imagine. But you can imagine them simply because you can’t afford not to when your son’s life is at stake.

When my son is 12 or 13 and leaves to go ride bikes with his friends, I’ll say, “Be careful.” And I’ll mean it. I’ll tell him that because cars might be going too fast and not paying attention. Or because if he falls he might hit his head. Or maybe because it will be getting dark out soon.

I’ll be thinking about all the things that could go wrong. Anticipating them before they happen.

    I’ll be being a Mom.

What I won’t be doing is worrying about someone being suspicious of my son riding his bike just because he’s a white boy. I won’t worry about some resident calling the cops because they think he’s up to no good—for absolutely no reason. I won’t worry about my son getting followed by the police because a white kid stole a candy bar from a gas station & he “fits the description” just by being a white male.

    But you will.

You’re a mom raising a black son, so you will be worrying about every single one of those things.

Because you know stuff like that happens. You know it happens because you’ve seen it happen. You’ve felt it happen. You’ve had it happen. To you. Or to yours.

    I haven’t.

When my son is 17 and goes to a party, I will be a mess. Worried sick. Worried that he will get in the car with someone who has been drinking. Or that he’ll be hit by a drunk driver. That he will try drugs. Worried that he will be in a freak accident.

I will warn him to be smart and not drink or try anything. I will warn him not to get in the car with anyone. I’ll warn him to drive carefully because there may be drunk drivers on the road. I’ll warn him that he could be pulled over. And I will warn him that the cops could come and if he gets in trouble it could stay on his record.

I’ll be worried about all those things. I’ll be worried about my son.

It’s almost too much worry to bear. And yet we have to, because that is the nature of this thing called life. And it’s definitely the nature of this thing called Motherhood.

You’ll be worried, too. About all those things. You’ll be worried about your son, just like I’ll be worried about mine.

But you’ll also be worried about other things. Things that only Moms raising black sons have to worry about.

While I’m worrying about my son getting pulled over when a cop is suspicious he has been drinking, you’ll be worrying about your son getting murdered when they ask him to step out of the car. Which sounds—and is—completely outlandish, but it happens. While I’m worrying about the party getting busted and my son getting in trouble for being there, you’ll be worrying about your son getting killed during the bust because of what he looks like. When my son gets caught doing something he shouldn’t & takes off running, I’ll be torn up about him doing something that could’ve hurt him & I’ll be worried about him getting in trouble. You’ll be torn up, too, but you’ll be worried about your son running & getting shot in the back.

Many of my worries for my white son are the same as my fellow mama’s worries for her black son. We’re both Mothers, after all. And with Motherhood comes some of the most beautiful, strong solidarity you can imagine.

But I also realize my worries for my white son are a fraction of a mama’s worries for her black son.

A Mom raising a black son carries double the load of worry & fear for her son than I have to carry for mine.

Things I will never have to think twice about with regards to my own boy will be the very things she can never stop thinking about.

I can barely handle my own worries for my children. I’m not sure I could stomach even one extra worry, much less a whole other set.

But you do that daily. For no other reason than because your son has darker skin than my son.

That’s it. Just color. It’s nothing.

It’s nothing and yet it’s everything.

How can something that’s such a nothing change everything?

    Because we have let it.

    Dear Moms raising Black Sons,

I see you. I’m with you. But I know I’m not you.

And because of the extra worries and fear for your child that you have to live with daily, I wouldn’t want to be.

And that tells me everything I could ever need to know about racial injustice.

  • How a Kid’s Hourglass Timer got our Kids to Clean Up

How a Kid’s Hourglass Timer got our Kids to Clean Up

Every now & then you stumble upon something that actually makes a difference in your life. And it sounds silly to say that about a set of kid’s hourglass timers, but I’d be lying if I said they hadn’t rocked our world by helping get our kids to clean up after themselves.

    This post contains affiliate links.

(Here’s the link to the hourglass timer set we have in case you want to skip the article…but I’d “buy now” & then come back & read. Some solid Mom hacks in this one.)

As parents, we were struggling to get our kids to clean up. That’s how it all started.

I’m a big believer in letting kids make messes & play & use their imaginations in the biggest & best ways. I love that part of childhood. But if you’re going to let them play like there’s no tomorrow, that usually means them making a mess like there’s no tomorrow, too.

We’d play play play all day, but then when it was time for our kids to clean up it was basically Mission: Impossible.

They’d complain. Or fuss. Or cry. But, we’d always manage to get our kids to clean up. (Well, at least our son. Our daughter…not so much.)

The problem was how much effort it took from usthe parents—to get our kids to clean up.

    It took A LOT.

If I’m being honest, it would be both easier & more peaceful if we just cleaned up everything by ourselves every night. But what would that be teaching our kids? Not a damn thing. It’s important that they know how to clean up after themselves and it’s our job as parents to help them learn how.

So, we would basically spend 30 minutes every night trying to get our kids to clean up. (I mean just look at that mess)

    View this post on Instagram

A post shared by C’MON MAMA (@cmon.mama) on

We would oversee their clean up. And not from a distance. I mean overseeing it by being right next to them in the clean up trenches, constantly saying “Okay, what about this? How about that? Does it look clean? Where does that go? Don’t just throw things in there, put them back in the right place.”

It was driving my husband and me nuts. It was exhausting us. And, it was exhausting our kids. Even the tiniest messes became big deals. Messes that should take 10 minutes for our kids to clean up would take 30. Or more.

So one night I decided I was done with being the clean-up referee & dishing out play-by-play clean up instructions. I got the biggest box I could find from the garage (luckily I had just ordered dog food on Amazon), brought it upstairs & just said, “You have 10 minutes to clean up. Anything not in the right spot after those 10 minutes will go in this box. And those toys will stay in that box until you earn them back because if it’s too much to clean up then it’s too much to play with.”

    They were floored.

It mostly worked, but they kept asking if it had been 10 minutes yet. On repeat. Like every 10 seconds. So, it was still exhausting, albeit less so.

I realized we needed some kind of clean-up timer, and it hit me that an hourglass timer for kids would be ideal so they could have a visual of the time. I came across a kid’s hourglass timer set and BOOM. It was go time.

    (Hallelujah for 2 day shipping.)

The night the kid’s hourglass timers got delivered, I put the 10 minute timer out & explained that the sand would take 10 minutes to empty to the bottom & after that—”time’s up.” Let me tell you, having that visual was HUGE for my kids (they’re 5 & 3 but were 4 & 2 at the time). It was crucial for the success of my new “hands off” clean up routine that they be able to monitor how much time they had left on their own.

Kids have no concept of time when they’re young. It’s one of my favorite things about having little kids, actually. Because I can say “10 minutes” to anything whether it’s 2 or 30 minutes. Or I can say it’s “almost bedtime” at 4:00 if I want. They don’t know. I’m milking that for as long as I can.

But the flip side of that is, you can’t tell them “10 minutes” & expect them to know how to manage that. That was the mistake I made the first night with the clean-up box. As soon as I introduced the kid’s hourglass timers into the mix, it was Mission: Accomplished.

    View this post on Instagram

A post shared by C’MON MAMA (@cmon.mama) on

And the crazy thing is, my kids immediately loved using these timers. They loved monitoring the time progression and “warning” each other when they were getting close to running out of time.

These kid’s hourglass timers deserve total “mom hack” status. They proved so successful with getting our kids to clean up that we started using them for everything we could:

    • Timeouts
    • Brushing teeth
    • Taking turns with toys they both “had first”
    • Screen time/tablet time
    • How much longer they can play until dinner
    • Brother/Sister play time before bed

The list could go on & on.

These hourglass timers for kids have become one of my favorite mom hacks—for everything from getting our kids to clean up to getting them to play nicely together.

I love all the time options in our kid’s hourglass timer set because there’s the perfect timer for everything.

1 minute brushing teeth. 3 minutes with the “toy of the moment” before they have to switch. 5 minutes until dinner. 10 minutes to clean up. 15 minutes to clean up a big mess. 20 minutes to play before we have to get ready for bed. 30 minutes of brother/sister time before tuck-in. Or tablet or screen time. The options are endless.

kids hourglass timer get kids to clean up after themselves

And my favorite thing about using the kid’s hourglass timers is that it leaves zero room for questions.

No more “How much longer?” or “Is it almost time?” or “Is it my turn yet?” The timers speak for themselves. Which means I might can finally catch my breath. And somehow my kids listen—like really listen—to those inanimate silent timers. Even better than they listen to me.

And you know what? I don’t even care. I’m totally calling it a win.

  • Easy Kid’s Charcuterie Board (a “mom hack” version!)

Easy Kid’s Charcuterie Board (a “mom hack” version!)

I have a new Mom Hack & my kids are as obsessed as I am: a Kid’s Charcuterie Board.

You’re probably thinking it sounds “too fancy” for your kids to like or for you to worry about. Double wrong.

Read on for how I stumbled upon the brilliance that is a Kid’s Charcuterie Board, why we’re all in love with it, & how to throw together your own with zero effort.

We recently started doing Family Movie Nights every Sunday & it has been so special & fun. We all pick a movie together & snuggle up on the couch….Well, most of us. Our 3 year old daughter basically plays the whole time, but still—it’s some awesome family QT.

But, I didn’t want to stop & cook during movie night. I wanted to be present with my family and not just in the background like Mamas so often are (because who else is going to do allll the things?) So as I looked in the pantry & fridge for something quick & easy, I pulled a few options out that I was going to decide between. Then I realized I had pulled out fruit, crackers, & nuts…basically the beginning of a charcuterie board.

So I grabbed one of my fave wooden trays & just started putting a few of all those things on there. A couple different types of crackers, whatever fruit we had on hand, some nuts, then I grabbed black olives, some ham, & since we were out of cheese sticks I just put a little pile of shredded mozzarella on there. We had half a bell pepper & like 3 slices of cucumber leftover in the fridge so I threw those on there, too.

I couldn’t get over how awesome this little improvised Kid’s Charcuterie Board looked.

I took it back over to the coffee table & set it down & said “This is a Charcuterie Board, you can eat whatever you want straight off of it.” My kids looked at me like they couldn’t believe what I’d just said & done. No plates? Whatever we want? As much as we want? In whatever order we want? Needless to say, THEY LOVED IT.

    And so did I.

Because I’d inadvertently discovered the easiest dinner ever: a Kid’s Charcuterie Board.

    kids charcuterie board

You can throw on anything you want. No matter how you do it, it looks special & different & fun. You can’t mess it up.

And my favorite part is this: It takes zero planning to put together and it’s the most perfect way to use up little bits of leftovers you didn’t want to throw out but that aren’t enough for a full meal! Total Mom Hack.

To make your own Kid’s Charcuterie Board, just raid your pantry & fridge…and voilà! Done. But for a little extra inspo, below are some ideas for things to round it out.

And remember—you just need a little bit of each thing. Don’t overdo the portions. It’s more about variety than quantity.

    This article contains affiliate links.

    *Kid’s Charcuterie Board:

    -Crackers

I’ve used basic crackers like saltines & cheez-its and “fancy” ones like our fave raisin rosemary crackers from Trader Joe’s. Pretzels, goldfish, & veggie sticks also work great!

    -Fresh Fruit

Whatever you have on hand. Slice them up. Strawberries, grapes, apples, blueberries, bananas, oranges (& yes the mandarin packs totallyyy count)

    -Dried Fruit

    Raisins, craisins, apricots, etc.

    -Nuts

Honey peanuts & pistachios are the faves in our house. And the praline pecans from Costco.

    -Veggies

Pepper slices, cucumber sticks or rounds, carrots, tomatoes, pickles

    -Olives

I couldn’t bring myself to put olives under fruit even though technically that’s what they are

    -Meat

I usually throw in some ham or turkey strips or chunks, but recently I put pepperonis on there just to see what my kids thought. Neither liked them but it’s all about no-pressure exposure so I’ll keep throwing a couple on.

    -Cheese

Pile of shredded cheese, cheese slices or cubes, cheese sticks (My kids love brie & honey goat cheese when I put it on the crackers for them. When it’s just sitting there by itself, not so much…)

    -Sweets

Pile of chocolate chips, graham crackers, cookies, yogurt raisins, yogurt pretzels, or a couple pieces of chocolate

    -Miscellaneous

Anything else you’ve got. Seriously, I’ve thrown a handful of cereal on there several times & it’s always the first thing they go for. And boiled egg halves. They always love those. If I was feeling like I wanted to clean up a mess, I’d throw a tiny bowl of honey or jam on there. But let’s be honest, I’m never feeling like that so I never put any condiments on there. But you might be braver than me, in which case—go for it.

The beauty of a Kid’s Charcuterie Board is…you can’t do it wrong.

    -Tray

And, of course you need a great cheese tray/board, which you probably already have. But, if you don’t, I have 2 top picks from Amazon: a “blank slate” board & a board with small bowls/spoons. Both are the perfect size, the perfect shape, & the perfect price. I use a blank slate board for ours because it makes cleaning so easy & there is nothing to break, but I can see how the bowls would be useful & fun!

kid eating off of kid charcuterie board

*I want to make sure I mention that I always cut up every single thing to lessen the chance of choking. My child choked a year ago & it was the scariest moment of my life. I’ll never forget it. Take the 2 extra minutes to cut the grapes & olives vertically (& again after that if they’re still too big), and the cherry tomatoes, heck I even cut blueberries in half if they’re too big. Nuts are a big choking hazard so be wary of those (I pick out the whole peanuts & only serve my kids the halves). Did you know that bananas & peanut butter are also big choking hazards for kids? I used to not. I do now. There’s no harm in being cautious about choking hazards but there is most certainly the possibility of harm if you’re not.

Besides being so easy to put together & using up lots of my leftovers, the thing I love about doing a Kid’s Charcuterie Board for my two is how much they love it.

From the very first time I set one in front of them, it was clear that it made them feel like something was extra special about the whole night. It just looks special. And having the freedom to eat as much as they want and in whichever order they want just feels special.

And I mean, I get it. I love charcuterie boards, too. If we’re being honest a charcuterie board is really just a delicious tray of snacks. And who doesn’t love snacks?

(And here’s an added bonus: study after study shows that allowing kids to eat the things they love with no pressure to eat the things they don’t like or are unsure of is the key to helping them learn to like & try new, different foods. So, a Kid’s Charcuterie Board is a perfect vehicle for that kind of no-pressure dinner.)

Throwing together a Kid’s Charcuterie Board is an easy way to be a “fun” Mom. And that’s the type of mom hack we can all get on board (get it?) with.

Check on the Moms with Young Kids (their quarantine is hard, too)

Heads up: Check on your Mom friends with young kids, because THEIR quarantine life is hard, too. It may look like rainbows & cookies. But in between the magic, it’s hard. And maybe in a different way than yours.

I bet you can tell where I am in the picture above.

    Yes, I’m in the bathroom.

And yes, I’m sitting on the toilet.

And if you’re a Mom with young kids, I bet you can tell me why I’m sitting there.

Because being a Mom with young kids is hard.

It’s totally & completely unrelenting. And sometimes escaping to the bathroom is the only way you can get a 2 minute break. And even then, it’s about 50/50 they’ll find you before you can take a breath.

(Breaking News: Dads aren’t the only ones who hide out in the bathroom. Mamas do it, too. Especially Moms with young kids.)

I recently realized that I’ve been doing myself a disservice. And I’d be willing to bet that you probably have, too. Especially if you’re a Mom who is quarantining with young kids.

I’m a Stay at Home Mom with 2 little kids. I’ve already talked about how surprised I was that being quarantined with young kids feels so much harder than just being home with young kids….home like I always am since I’m a SAHM.

For weeks, I’ve been feeling grateful & lucky that my kids are young so the pressures of school & curriculums & schedules & assignments don’t apply to them…which means they don’t apply to me, either. And I really am thankful for that. Because I can barely handle what’s already on my plate; I sure as heck don’t need another helping.

But here I’ve been thinking Moms with young kids have it so much easier than Mamas with kids who are older and thus are having to fill that school/teacher gap.

And in some ways, I think that still holds true.

But here’s what I didn’t realize at first: Social distancing with little kids is just as difficult—in a different, completely unrelenting way.

It took me about 5 weeks of being quarantined with my 2 young kids for that to hit me. But when it did, it hit me like a ton of bricks.

I mean, don’t get me wrong—I’d a thousand times rather play superheroes or baby dolls or make chalk masterpieces with my kids than teach them calculus right now. No contest.

BUT there’s another element to this I’ve discounted and now I want to shout it from the rooftops for all of you Mamas with young children who are hanging on by the world’s thinnest thread some days like me:

Being a Mom with young kids right now IS extremely tough, just in very different ways than being a Mom with older children is right now (which is also extremely tough).

Newsflash: It’s not a contest. If it were, we’d all win.

    moms with young kids

So why is being a Mom with young kids so hard right now?

Because young children are completely, totally dependent on us. For food, for going to the bathroom, for getting dressed, for working through meltdowns over even the most minor of frustrations like trying to draw a T-Rex correctly. Or in my 3 year old daughter’s case, her epic meltdown because she “kept drawing her circles upside down.” And you can’t really reason with a 3 year old. When I explained that circles couldn’t be upside down because they were the same on all sides no matter how you drew them…well, let’s just say that did not help. Far from it, actually.

Young kids are bursting with energy. They want to play. Rough house. Tickle. Roll around. And just physically play. Sure they love vegging out in front of the TV, too. But then they want to DO SOMETHING.

They want to move and play. And not like dainty play. Like real play. Play play.

Their energy level is major, and the energy they require from us is major, too.

And young kids are demanding, whether they mean to be or not. Because even the most independent young child still needs us for stuff. To get something out of the panty or fridge. Or to go to the bathroom. To help pour their drink. To find something they can’t. And to fix…well, everything. Moms fix everything from booboos to block towers and a million things in between. Including broken little hearts over real stuff like missing their grandparents or friends. And over absurd stuff like the aforementioned T-Rex and circle fiascos.

The bottom line for Moms with young kids is this: they need us.

    All day. Every day.

And that honestly is a lot different from older children.

Older kids who you can send to their room for hours when you just can’t Mom anymore. Older kids who want to be in their room by themselves anyway. (I am so not ready for those days. Not sure my Mama heart can take that.) Older kids who can fix themselves something to eat when they’re hungry. Or go to the bathroom by themselves.

Motherhood is hard. Whether your kids are 5 or 35, it’s hard. That part never changes. (just ask your own Mom)

What changes are the ways in which it’s hard. Moms with young kids have a different hard than Moms with older kids.

We don’t have to worry about our little kids falling in with the wrong group of friends or being exposed to something or someone dangerous online. We don’t have to make sure they don’t fall behind in school during this unprecedented closure of schools nationwide. And we don’t have to deal with teen attitudes and backtalk.

While Moms with older kids are doing all that, we’ll be playing with our tiny bosses.

Trying to come up with new things to do with them when there is literally nowhere to go & nothing new to do. We’ll be trying to help them cope with emotions much bigger than they are. We’ll be helping them go to the bathroom, all day every day. And we’ll be trying to find the time to go to the bathroom ourselves. And then when we do find a minute to pee in solitude because we go to the bathroom with a baby gate up so no one can follow us in there, we’ll be trying to drown out  “Mama Mama Mamaaaaaa” for those precious few seconds. We’ll be dealing with tantrums. Often over the most nonsensical things you can imagine.

We’ll be doing our hard while our fellow Mamas are doing theirs.

I’m not wishing any of it away. I’m fully aware our kids only need us like they do when they’re young for a few fleeting years. And that breaks my heart because I already feel the time slipping away faster than I want it to.

And I know most Mamas with older kids out there right now would switch places with us in a second. They’d jump at the chance to play pretend or make a chalk mosaic with their little kids. Or to have playing in the rain with their kids be the big thing they did that day. This time with our young children really is magical.

mom with young kids playing in the rain

So, make no mistake: I wouldn’t trade where I am with my kids right now for anything in the world. I love this age and this stage.

I don’t want to trade it. But I do want to say it. Loudly.

    IT. IS. HARD.

(Other Mamas think so, too. Promise.)

So check on your Mom friends with young kids. Because the quarantine life is hard for them, too. And no amount of bubbles & finger paint & bike rides can change that.

  • Why is Quarantine with Kids so much harder than LIFE with Kids?

Why is Quarantine with Kids so much harder than LIFE with Kids?

Why is quarantine with kids so hard?

Why does being home with them right now feel…so different?

I keep asking myself this. And here’s the answer.

Because, this isn’t just being home with your kids.

I’m a Stay at Home Mom and I’m always home with my kids. And yet this whole quarantine with kids thing feels completely different than our “normal” lives.

But that’s because nothing about any of this is normal.

Quarantine with kids isn’t just being home with your kids.

It’s being home with your kids with nowhere to go and no one to see and pretty much no one to talk to….except—you guessed it—your kids.

    quarantine with kids meme

There is no school. No play dates. No playgrounds.

There are no aquariums, museums or jump places.

    No restaurants.

There are definitely no date nights.

No babysitters. And for many of us, there’s not even help from Grandmom. Or other extended family members.

    There are no errands.

I didn’t even realize how much joy (yes, apparently joy) and fulfillment running errands gave me until there were none to run.

It turns out that I like getting out. I like Target (I mean, obvi). And I even like the grocery store.

    Who knew?

Social distancing with kids feels (and is) so much harder because not only do you have no backup or reprieve from Momming, but all of your normal places & activities are totally shut down.

And you’re wondering why quarantining with kids feels so hard?

I sure was. I was beating myself up over the fact that this somehow felt so much harder than my normal #momlife.

Like I said, I’m a SAHM so I was already used to being home with my kids all the time. And on top of that, I’m a total homebody by nature. I mean I loooove being home.

But, my kids and I love to do things together, too. Sure, we play at home all the time. But we also go on adventures together. That’s a big part of our lives. My kids are young (5 & 3), so adventures like going to “the donut factory” are big events for us (one of my mom hacks is calling Krispy Kreme the “donut factory”—try it sometime, they’ll love it).

We often go to different playgrounds to “mix it up.” And we go to the movies. Or we go to Target and hit up the dollar spot. We go to a friend’s house. Or my Mom’s house.

We stay, but we also go.

And now we can’t. That’s a lot different.

And it makes it harder. A lot harder.

It’s okay to admit that things are hard right now. Way harder than normal.

It’s like we’re living in a “Groundhog Day” reboot that we can’t seem to turn off.

    And we’re all Bill Murray.

    quarantine with kids meme

We need to stop asking ourselves why this is so much harder than normal & just own the fact that of course it is.

    How could it not be?

What’s going on in our world right now is unprecedented. And all that unknown and fear seeps into every aspect of our lives.

Our only goal through this Covid-19 outbreak and quarantine with kids should be to make it through each day.

    Because that’s enough.

    More than enough.

  • Mom Burnout is Real but there’s a Cure

Mom Burnout is Real but there’s a Cure

The mom burnout struggle is real.

    Very real.

I’m sure every mama feels totally burnt out at some point. If not today, then yesterday. Or tomorrow. Or heck, every day.

It doesn’t mean you’re a bad mom if you feel like you might have mom burnout. It actually means you’re probably a rockstar mom, and giving way, way too much of yourself.

I’m only 5 years into Motherhood, and I’m not okay with being a burnt out Mama. Charred, I’ll take, but not burned.

mom burnout not a bad mom

I love Motherhood way too much to let it become a negative thing for me. I don’t want to be a super stressed, burnt out, busy mom. What I want is to be a happy mom.

We can either allow mom burnout to be our new normal or we can do something about it.

I’ve found a cure that has saved me from mom burnout. It’s made all the difference for me in my Motherhood and has helped keep me sane, happy & present even when I’m being pulled in a million different directions by a million different things and a million different people. Or by 2 small yet very demanding people. Same same.

Doing this one thing has made me more patient with my children, my husband, bills, life, the dog and more when they’re singing the never-ending “Mom, Mama, MAMAAAAA” song on repeat. Because I really do love that song. It’s actually my favorite one. But when I’ve been jamming to one song on repeat for a bit, at some point I might need to take a breath before blasting it again.

This is the one thing I wish I could tell every Mom—whether she’s a Mom-to-be, a new Mama, or a seasoned Mother—to keep her from feeling that almost inescapable mom burnout.

So what is it? Here goes:

    Be selfish with your time.

Did you just roll your eyes because I made it sound like such a big deal and then it was anti-climactic because it sounds so simple? Be honest. I bet you did.

Well guess what? You’re wrong. You’re wrong because it’s a huge freaking deal. Huge. And it’s also super hard to do.

In Motherhood, your time is rarely yours. Actually, I think there’s a universal but not widely recognized time zone called MOMTIME. And all Mamas operate on it.

It’s when your time is not your own. In fact, your time belongs to pretty much everyone else but you.

Think about it. Your time is spent either with, on, or for your children.

You’re either physically taking care of them OR you’re thinking about how to take the best care of them OR you’re actively doing things like grocery shopping & registering for the next school year to…wait for it…take care of them.

    c'mon mama mom burnout

And if it’s not them, it’s someone else in your life. Or something else. Honestly, how could you not have mom burnout?

    Because it’s your spouse.
    It’s your pet.
    It’s your job.
    It’s your home.
It’s the bills bills bills. (cue Destiny’s Child)
    It’s your email inbox.
    It’s your to do list.
    It’s your to do piles.
It’s your to do rooms. (just me?)
It’s your laundry. (Well it’s really THEIR laundry, but you get my point).

    It’s. Your. Life.

And life is beautiful. But life can also be so freaking busy. So busy you feel like you can’t ever sit down. So busy you feel like there’s just “never enough time.” (Be honest, how many times have you thought that? Unless you answered “a million” you might be lying.) And certainly so busy you can never find any “me time.”

And you feel like that because it’s true. Because you don’t. You don’t have enough time. Not now, and if we’re being honest, you probably never will.

And that’s normal. That’s okay. Learn to be okay with it. Don’t think it’s just you. It’s not. Every single person I know feels that way, starting with my own Mama.

Though she never let us—her children—feel it, my mom has had a textbook case of mom burnout probably since she became a Mom. As a child, I had no idea. As a mother, I see it so clearly now.

What happens with us humans is this: we have a million things on our constantly growing to-do list, and every time we might get one done, we think of 3 others to add. Some things are necessary and really do need to get done. Others are things we want to get done, sometimes for no real reason than just because we want to.

Yes we’re busy. Sometimes we do it to ourselves (hello, taking on stuff we don’t have to) and sometimes the universe does it to us (hello, thing called life.)

But either way, we don’t get a gold star for being busy. Busy doesn’t mean successful. Busy doesn’t mean important. Busy doesn’t even always mean productive. Sometimes busy is just…busy. And sometimes busy is just wasting time.

So what if I told you you could have time? Not enough time, but some time. For you. (No I’m not about to pitch you my MLM scheme, so calm down.)

Don’t want mom burnout? Be selfish with your time.

I mean like really selfish with it.

c'mon mama mom burnout mom wearing wife mom boss shirt
    Basically.

For the little bit that’s yours, hold on to it. Freaking ball that time up and hide it and don’t let anyone get to it. Not even the people you love the most.

You have to be okay with being selfish with it. That can be really hard at first. It might even seem mean. Or just impossible. But if you want it badly enough, you can make it happen.

So how do you protect your time and stop being the busy mom (& start being the happy mom)?

Welcoming to Avoiding Mom Burnout 101: Say No.

People will ask things of you. It might be your kid’s school. It might be your spouse. Or it might be your job.

    Say No sometimes.

It might be your neighborhood. Or it might be your family. It might even be your children.

    Say No.

    When you can, Say No.

Or if you really can’t bring yourself to say “No” then try “Maybe next time.” And then rinse & repeat that until they stop asking. (#sorrynotsorry)

I have two children. A 5 year old and a 3 year old. I’m in the mom burnout trenches, so to speak. And I’m a Stay at Home Mom. My kids are here with me all day. But I don’t want that to feel like a bad thing. Because it’s honestly the most beautiful part of my life. Soon enough, they won’t be here with me during the day. (I know, I know…here comes “The days are long but the years are short” talk. But you know what? It’s true. Don’t hate.)

I’m not ready for that day. I want to enjoy my time with them while their entire world revolves around me. When I’m with them, I try hard to really be with them. To be present. And not distracted by the million things I know I need to get to.

But that got me into a pattern. A remarkably productive but also unhealthy and ultimately unsustainable pattern that helped me “do it all.”

I was trying to be fully present with my kids when they were awake but because I was getting nothing done during the day I was then using every spare second when they were asleep or not at home to do all the things for all the people. So maybe I was “doing it all,” but I was not leaving even a minute to myself.

I think we all could “do it all” if we really wanted to. But at what expense? What would that even prove? Just because we can doesn’t mean we should.

I’d work the whole time my kids napped and then they’d wake up and it’d be right back to momming (my favorite thing, btw….but every Mama needs a break) up until bedtime.

    c'mon mama mom burnout
    Story. Of. My. Life.

And then after the kids went down one of 3 things would happen:
    1. I’d be so tired I would want to go right to sleep, but it would feel so good to sit down that I’d sit on the couch doing nothing for 3 hours and then be so mad at myself I wasted all that time…and didn’t go to sleep
    2. I’d spend time with my husband whether it’d be watching The Big Bang or having one
    3. I’d keep trying to catch up on everything I hadn’t gotten to, neglecting sleep, down time, my spouse & myself in the process

But whichever one I chose, I was still feeling that mom burnout. There was nothing just for me. No true down time. Not at the beginning, middle or end of the day. Not any day.

I don’t do that anymore. I started protecting my time. It has changed everything for me.

How can you kick mom burnout to the curb? I’ll say it over & over & over. Be selfish with your time. Pick a place to start. And make it yours.

Maybe it’s early in the morning. Maybe it’s your lunch time. Maybe it’s when your kid is at school. Maybe it’s after bedtime.

The first place I started with was my kids’ nap time.

    mom burnout screened your call

Since I’m a SAHM, I’m at home with them during their naps. And I consider that nap time window absolutely sacred. For them and for me. They don’t just need it, I do. It has become MY time for myself. I do whatever I want to with it. I screen phone calls that I don’t want to take. Or I call the people I want to catch up with. I don’t answer texts. Or sometimes I catch up on 3 weeks worth of texts. I used to pay all the bills or unload the dishwasher and straighten up as soon as I put the kids down for naps. I don’t do that anymore. Unless I feel like it.

    I. Do. What. I. Want.

And damn, it feels good to be a gangsta. (Or a Mama looking out for herself. Same same.)

I want to do things in my own life. Exciting things like this blog. Mundane things like cleaning out my own closet and not just everyone else’s. Selfish things like taking care of my skin. Foreign things like sitting down.

I got tired of trying to squeeze my entire adult life into a few minutes every night.

You can’t always save yourself for last, Mama. There might be nothing left.

You’ll feel tired. And beat down. And unfulfilled.

You’ll feel resentful. You’ll feel hardened. And impatient.

    You’ll. Feel. That. Mom. Burnout.

c'mon mama mom burnout baby passed out on chair with bottle in hand

And all those feelings will seep into every crack of you. And you will become unrecognizable to yourself some days. You won’t like the kind of mom that impatience & exhaustion make you be.

And you won’t like the kind of mom that mom burnout makes you be.

    So change it.

Sometimes the laundry can wait. Sometimes the organizing can wait. And sometimes the grocery store can wait…one more day.

Before you say it—yes, I know, and you’re right. Sometimes it can’t.

But, you don’t have to do every single thing you feel like you need to get done right this second. Just carry those things to the next day. Heck I’ve carried some stuff over to “the next day” for a damn year. No, I don’t like having it hang over me. But I’d rather have the time. It’s a trade off I’ve come to not only tolerate, but appreciate.

Some days I do laundry at the very end of the night and don’t let it cut into my time with my kids. Other days I do laundry throughout the whole day and put on a show (or 10) for my kids because I know I want the time to myself that night. But you know when I never do it anymore? Nap time. That quiet time ain’t got no place for laundry.

Now I’m so protective of my time you’d think it was endangered.

On second thought, it kind of is.

Because most of it really does belong to your children and family. That’s the nature of having a family and being a Mom. But the time you can carve out for you? Let it be yours. Don’t let anyone get their hands on it. Even if they’re the cutest, sweetest & stickiest little child handprints.

Being selfish with my time is my cure for mom burnout.

And I am such a happier Mama for it. A happier person.

I might be behind on a million things but I don’t have mom burnout.

I’ve become so selfish with my time that if someone asks me to do something for them, it’s more of a “I’ll get to it when I get to it” than a “Sure of course let me take care of it right now.”

That is SO different from how I used to be.

Sure I might could get it done today. But I’ve been Momming nonstop and when I put the kids down for a nap I just might not want to. And I’m okay with that. It is an adjustment to be okay with that, but that adjustment feels gooooood. I’ve never been to a chiropractor but maybe that’s what it feels like. So damn good.

Everyone is short on time. That’s why we ask others to help us and do things for us…because by using their time it gives us more time. You have to be okay with not doing stuff for everyone else all the time. Not prioritizing their time over yours. That’s hard. I realize I might sound harsh.

But I’m practicing self-preservation. I’m also saving myself from mom burnout. And you should, too.

It took some growing pains, but I’m good with it now.

You don’t have to do it all. You don’t even have to do more. Just do enough.

  • A “Schedule Free” Approach to Social Distancing with Young Kids at Home

A “Schedule Free” Approach to Social Distancing with Young Kids at Home

The Coronavirus is real and it’s scary. But most importantly, it’s here.

And what about “social distancing?” It matters. We’re taking it seriously. I hope you will, too.

Is social distancing & hunkering down at home extreme? Yes. Is cancelling everything extreme? Yes.

Is extreme what it’s going to take to (hopefully) curb Covid-19? Yes.

Is social distancing with kids tough? Yes…and no.

I’ll admit that at first I thought we’d have play dates with friends who are “being careful like us.” I thought wrong. That’s not enough. It won’t work. It won’t inhibit the spread of this beast of a virus.

Then I thought we’d still go to playgrounds. Wrong again. Did you know this virus can survive for days on plastic & stainless surfaces? Aka slides & monkey bars?

    So then what?

Where are we during social distancing?

    I’ll tell you where.

    We are at home.

    We are on the porch.

We are riding scooters on our dead end street.

We are in the patch of grass in front of our house because we don’t have a yard.

We are at the empty beach (we feel very blessed to have this option). And if everyone else suddenly has the same idea and it’s not an empty beach, we will go right back home.

We are snuggled up on the couch binging movies.

    Or in my big bed.

We are on a bike ride.

We are on a picnic in the middle of the living room.

We are in a couch fort.

    Above all, we are together.

And what are we doing during social distancing?

I’m not a homeschooling Mom. And I’m not a teacher. I’m a regular Mom (but I’d like to think I’m a cool Mom). I know sticking to a set daily schedule is a sanity-saver for many of you Mamas. Especially maybe for all of you who have jobs outside of the most demanding job of all—Motherhood.

I am a SAHM. I am thankful for that more than ever in a time like this. I know how lucky I am not to have to worry about another job right now.

And I know I might be in the minority on this, but we’re not having a schedule. I don’t really want a routine that I have to follow. We stick to a schedule(ish) when things are “normal,” but I’m throwing all that out the window right now because things are definitely not normal. Not for my kids and not for me. We are winging it and just taking each day as it comes.

So, what are we doing during this self-quarantine? I’ll tell you what.

    We are doing nothing.

We are watching all our favorite shows & movies. Over & over again.

    We are slowing down.

We are having pajama days. Probably every day, if I’m being honest.

    We are blowing bubbles.

And when we run out of bubbles, we will play with chalk.

And when we run out of chalk, we will trace sticks in the dirt.

We are finger painting. On paper and on our bodies.

social distancing with kids painting bodies with finger paint
Taking body paint to a new level.

We are attempting to do crafts, even if that just means gluing together pieces of paper.

    We are having dance parties.

We are turning out all the lights and playing with flashlights.

We are making rock, leaf, and stick collections.

    We are having tickle fights.

We are playing in the water, whether in a kiddie pool or with our hose (that’s broken, by the way, but the kids don’t seem to care).

We are taking long baths during the middle of the day.

    We are reading books together.

We are making our own books.

    We are coloring.

We are cooking easy things together.

We are talking to each other. And not just “how was your day” talk. We are talking about our favorite things. Funniest memories. I’m finding out if their favorite color or best friend has changed. Or about where they think the sun is on foggy days. We are talking about the things that are important in their lives, hearts and minds. Even if it’s why their Curious George stuffed animal doesn’t have the 3 sprigs of hair he has on every show and book illustration (this was a very real & very serious conversation in our house recently).

We are eating all the fresh stuff until it runs out and then we will eat all the processed food imaginable.

    We are playing.

social distancing play with your kids

So often as Mothers we beg for more time. “If only there were more hours in a day.” “If I could just get this done then I could sit down and play with them.” “If I can knock out these errands then we can hang out together later.”

Time is the one thing we never have enough of. And, self-quarantining and social distancing aren’t necessarily giving us more time. On the one hand, we have much less time to do all the things we need and want to do because we have zero breaks. Our kids are with us 24/7. And that’s super stressful. And hard. But on the other hand, we have more time to do all the things we always wish we could do with our kids. Things like playing.

School is cancelled. Activities are cancelled. We aren’t going out to eat or to the store. No more Target runs. The daily distractions have been temporarily removed from our lives. So in this sense, we do have more time.

So during this social distancing, stay home.

Stay separate from the rest of the world right now. We often want to do that anyways, and then when we get the chance we scoff at the idea.

I’m not scoffing. And I’m not sure I’d say I’m embracing it, either. Because all of this social distancing and self-quarantining comes from a scary place. But I am abiding by it. Because it’s the right thing to do. So I’m making the best of it.

Okay, so maybe that is embracing it now that I think about it.

We are doing everything I listed above. On our own time. Whenever we feel like it. Well, really whenever I feel like it. One day we might watch 6 movies in a row. The next we might be The Crafty McCraftersons.

Mamas, there is no right way to handle social distancing and self-quarantining during this Covid-19 outbreak.

Well, actually there is one right way: STAY HOME.

But other than that, do it however you want. Adhere to a daily schedule to save your sanity. Or throw out the schedule to save your sanity.

In addition to everything above, here are some super simple, do-able things for you to do with your young children (mine are 5 & 3 for reference) while yall are holed up at home for the foreseeable future. We will rinse & repeat these as often as we can. And want.

-Let them take long baths during the day

Seriously, let the kids take a bath when they wake up. Or mid-morning. Or in the afternoon. Don’t save it for bedtime like you usually do. And let them take a long one. Like reallyyy long. It doesn’t even matter if you bathe them. They may not need a bath. That’s not even really what it’s about. Long baths are one of my favorite mom hacks because it keeps them confined and happy and safe (obviously do not take your eyes off them). My kids love not being rushed in the bath and I love being able to sit down for over an hour and not do anything.

*Another of my favorite mom hacks is to give them a popsicle in the bath because they think it is the coolest thing ever and there is ZERO mess.

    social distancing popsicle in bath

-Say “Yes” to things you normally wouldn’t

Better yet, suggest things you’re normally not down with. If you’ve ever wished you were more of a “fun mom” here’s your chance. Let them paint their bodies (with these) and then throw them in the shower. Dessert for breakfast? Sure. Making decorations for the house & taping them up everywhere? Watch them beam with pride. Going outside to play in pajamas? Yep. And stay in yours, too. Playing in the rain? Definitely, and teach them how to catch rain drops in their mouth.

    -Play ice cream shop

The kids love it when I invite them to the “ice cream shop.” I put all the toppings in little bowls and let them build their own ice cream sundae.

    -Play restaurant

This is something my husband did with our kids one night when I was out, and I never heard the end of it. They LOVED it. He pretended to be the waiter and took their orders (“Tonight we’re serving peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or chicken and tater tots. What would you like?”) and served them. They do it all the time now. He writes their order on a little notepad and they think it’s the greatest.

    -Paint rainbow bread

This is something I only discovered recently and now it’s our new favorite thing. Get this natural food coloring delivered from Amazon (or use what you have on hand). Put the food coloring in little bowls of milk. Let them paint the bread. Either put butter & sugar on it (sugar toast, anyone?) and put it in the oven or toast it first and then spread honey on top. This is such a fun activity and doesn’t waste any of your necessary food stash (you eat the bread, and you can even let them drink the milk or make oatmeal or add it to mac & cheese, etc.)

    -Gather collections

Anything can become a collection. Seriously. Anything. Pinecones, rocks, sticks, leaves, flowers. Put out some large bowls for their collections and continue to add to them during the social distancing duration. You’ll be surprised how proud they are of their collections.

    -Paint rocks

And on the same token, painting rocks is one of our favorite things to do ever. I have a beautiful wooden bowl filled with their painted rocks. It’s on display at all times and I love that. Our favorite way to paint rocks is with these tempera paint crayons. They are so easy to use and so washable. They can paint the same rocks over and over again.

    -Let them cook with you

If I was a Chef, I’d be something along the lines of Chef Boyardee. So let’s be real—I’m talking about doing simple things together. Like baking cookies (I use the break apart ones—that’s how simple I’m talking). One of our very favorite things to do together is make pizza biscuits. I used to do it with my grandmom and they are the most delicious things ever.  And they’re so easy & exactly what they sound like: take a can of biscuits, split them in half, add sauce + cheese + toppings (we just do black olives), cook them and then eat every last one.

    social distancing making pizza biscuits

    -Let them watch TV

And don’t feel guilty about it. Honestly, I think TV is exactly what kids need sometimes. You like to binge watch TV. So why shouldn’t they like it, too?

-Let them work out with you

If you exercise, carve out the time to do it. Go on a bike ride, walk, run and take the kids. No, it won’t be like normal. Nothing about any of this is normal. I do yoga, and though it is definitely not relaxing or meditative to do it at home with kids climbing all over me, I can get it done-ish.

social distancing with kids yoga at home with mom

-Have a long daily quiet time

As long as possible. If your kid naps, great. If your kid doesn’t nap anymore, enforce quiet time. YOU NEED THIS TIME. Sure they do, too. But not as much as you.

My son “is trained” (but for real tho) to stay in his room for quiet time while his sister naps. That time to me is a life saver. I can rest or I can scroll the internet or I can do all the laundry. Whatever I want to do. It’s MY time. You need to make a section of the day be YOUR time, Mama. Otherwise, you will be burnt out in about oh, I don’t know, a day. (In general, this is my Mom burnout cure.)

If your kids won’t stay in their room then don’t feel guilty about putting on a movie or the 90 minute “5 Little Monkeys” compilation and telling them they get their “own time.” I have more success when I do it that way & make it fun for them versus when I say “I have to work, I need you to give me some time to myself.”

But usually I end up saying both because #momlife.

Mamas, hang in there. Social distancing with kids is hard, no matter how you cut it.

As with most things in life, a lot of making it through this with your sanity intact boils down to perspective. Sometimes we have to force a perspective shift.

And just for the record, making it through this with your health intact boils down to respecting social distancing and the seriousness of Covid-19.

We need do the best we can, not just for ourselves. But for the sake of everyone else, too.

If there is ever a time when what you do matters, it’s now.

People might say it’s an overreaction. But let me say this. We might not know if we overreact, but we will certainly know if we underreact.

Stay safe and sane, Mamas. And smart. ♥️

  • The Best Advice for a Mom-to-Be (from other Moms)

The Best Advice for a Mom-to-Be (from other Moms)

The best advice for a Mom-to-Be can only really come from one type of a person…Yep, you guessed it. Another Mom.

I’m a big believer in other Moms being a Mama’s best resource. Maybe even our secret weapon.

They have been there. They’ve done that. They’ve walked the walk. No one can offer you tips, tricks, dos & don’ts quite like another Mother. I think the best advice for a Mom-to-Be comes straight from her peers.

When I was expecting my first, I asked my Mom friends who were a little ahead of me on the Mom train for advice all the time. Advice on the little things like the best bottles and advice on the big things like…duh nuh nuh…crying it out. And sometimes I listened & did exactly what they said while other times I ignored them completely & just did my own thing. But either way, I always asked for their advice because it was helpful for me to hear the different perspectives.

Then when I was pregnant with my second, I asked my mom friends with 2+ kids for advice. Because 2 or more is a whole different ballgame. And I’d never played in that game before. I was sitting on the bench and being able to watch them & listen to them gave me all the training I needed (well, maybe not allll).

No, other Moms don’t know it all. But they do know a lot. I’m a Mom now. I know some stuff. I’ve trialed-and-errored things & love sharing what worked & didn’t work for us. Other Moms feel the same way.

My sister is pregnant with her first child. I’m so excited for her that I can hardly think straight. I’m excited because I know.

I know what’s in store for her. I know how incredible becoming a Mother is. And I know how sweet the love of your child is.

I want to give her the best advice for a Mom-to-Be.

So I did what I’ve always done—I asked my Mom friends. Only now, I have thousands of Mom friends I can ask (thanks to @cmon.mama). So what did I do? I polled thousands of Mamas around the world to compile a list of the best advice for a Mom-to-Be. For YOU.

And they had a lot to say.

This is the first part in the “Best Advice for Moms” series. My favorite thing about this series is that it’s totally “For Moms by Moms.” It’s not my advice, it’s yours.

This is Part 1: Best Advice for a Mom-to-Be.

After this check out Part 2: Best Advice for a New Mom & Part 3: Best Advice for a Breastfeeding Mom.

My personal advice for a Mom-to-Be is to go with what you feel. Talk to your mom or your sister or other awesome women in your life. Quiz them. Read some articles. Do your homework. And then DO YOU.

Well, that and also this—you can go into labor early. That’s my other advice. No one told me that. Everyone talks about you being late, especially with your first. I was a week early with my first & 2 weeks early with my second. I cried when I went into labor with my son because I thought I had another week to get ready. Then I cried when I went into labor with my second because I was prepared to have her a week early & she came 2 weeks early. Those hormones/emotions are no joke.

Now, without further adieu, I give you some pretty perfect advice for a Mom-to-Be…straight from your fellow Mamas.

    In no particular order:

If you’re tired, rest. You’re literally growing a person inside of you. You have done enough for the day. Seriously. Think about that.

When you’re pregnant, eat small meals throughout day. It helps stave off some morning sickness.

Take more pregnancy pictures! You might not always feel beautiful when you’re bumping, but you are. And you will wish you had more evidence of that later!

Give yourself permission to rest when you need to & leave projects uncompleted. I felt a huge need to finish every detail of my daughter’s decor before she arrived and she didn’t notice a single thing besides being close to me!

    Take your prenatals.

Do a maternity shoot! In a beautiful lace dress. Look like a fertile goddess even when you might feel like a troll.

advice for a mom to be maternity picture lace dress
Do a maternity shoot. You’ll love them later & so will your kids.

Listen to your body. It will tell you exactly what it needs, which is exactly what you need.

A wonderful doula can be your best friend.

Paint your nails (or better yet, get SNS!) a few days before you’re due.

Don’t get caught up in a birth plan. If ever there’s a time the whole “things don’t go according to plan” is fitting…it’s in childbirth.

Pack your hospital bag. It will take one worry off your mind knowing you have those things ready.

Get one nice pair of maternity jeans.

With my first child, I was not active while pregnant but with my second I was extremely active. Stay as active as safely as possible! Even if you just go on a walk. That counts. It made me feel better because those hormone changes can be nuts.

My advice is to learn—as much as you can—about your baby before they come. Take a prenatal class, go to a breastfeeding seminar, learn about infant sleep…truly try to soak up as much as you can. As a new parent of 3 days, all I can say is I’m glad I did my homework! It made everything from pregnancy, to labor, to delivery, to postpartum with babe so so so much easier. My partner and I felt empowered to make informed decisions for our family & we feel confident in our new roles of mom & dad. Take the class, read the book, watch YouTube, listen to the podcast…take what works for you, leave the rest. Trust yourself. It will be okay.

If you can, freeze about 2-3 months worth of meals for after giving birth so you don’t even have to think about dinner or what to cook or eat.

When your water breaks it’s not like in the movies.

    • TRUTH. My water broke with both of mine & it was most def not a waterfall.

If you know you’ll be going back to work after maternity leave, start applying to preschools now. Yes, really.

Walking really does help with your delivery. So walk as much as possible. Also, yoga. For the physical and mental.

Take so many bump pics! You’ll love to look back on them later, no matter if you currently feel insecure or bigger than usual.

Take videos of them kicking when that time comes! It’s amazing to look back on later (& show them!).

Print out your labor plan and talk to your partner about it. And then know that you may have the exact opposite birth you envisioned. But once you have your baby in your arms, you won’t care.

    • For the record, I had an epidural with my first & planned to have one with my second. Actually, I thought I did have one but it felt so different…turns out the epidural needle had fallen out immediately & I had a totally natural birth. Things can get a little nuts during labor. Roll with it. That’s really all you can do. It’ll be worth it. Promise.
advice for mom to be after labor
This is all that will matter. Not how you got there.

Being pregnant can be hard. You get ready for it to be over. And then you miss it. Being a woman is weird.

I took the classes, read all the posts & books, talked to all my mom friends, you name it. And I’m soooo glad I did! I felt like I at least had a little idea of what was coming at me.

Take everything you can from the hospital after you give birth! Especially those cold snap packs and extra mesh undies. And the pads. You can thank me later.

Have a drink. I promise you can. One drink every now & again later on in your pregnancy is okay. Check with your OB/GYN and you’ll see I’m right.

Find a pediatrician you love. If you have to meet with a few to find the right fit, so be it. They’ll be taking care of your baby for years. In other words, they matter.

Share your pregnancy with your partner. The beautiful things, the hard things, the silly/crazy things. Sometimes even the gross-ish things. Take them along for the ride. You don’t have to be on the rollercoaster by yourself.

My advice is ENJOY YOUR PREGNANCY. It is really such a magical time in your life. Having your baby in your arms is beyond wonderful but there is just something about having them safe in your belly, feeling those kicks, knowing they’re in there growing & hearing the inner workings of your body. They are allll yours for 9 months & then all of a sudden you have to share them with the world.

Now that you’ve gotten great advice for a Mom-to-Be from other Mamas out there, I want you to do 3 things

  • I’m Scared to Fly since Becoming a Mom

I’m Scared to Fly since Becoming a Mom

I’m a Mom and I’m scared to fly.

Actually, I’m scared to fly since becoming a Mom.

I know what you might be thinking. Who wouldn’t be scared to fly with little kids? But that’s not it at all.

I’m not scared to fly with my kids, I’m scared to fly without them.

I know, I know. In what world does that make sense?

    Answer: Mine. In my world.

I’ve traveled all over the place. I count my opportunities to see this world as some of my luckiest moments. Being exposed to new people, new places, new languages, new culture, new food…it’s incredible.

C'mon mama mother scared to fly since having kids traveling in sicily and seville, dorne from game of thrones
On top of the highest active volcano in Europe, fanning out in Seville at Dorne from GoT, Temple of Concordia in Sicily

    I love traveling.

What I don’t love is flying.

I’ve never loved it. It’s always been a means to an end for me. With my travel destination being the end. But since becoming a Mother, I’ve developed an almost crippling fear of flying. I’m scared it’s going to be the means to a different type of end.

C'Mon mama mother with fear of flying since becoming a mother facetiming her kids on a trip
    FaceTime FTW

I’ll just come right out with it. I’m scared of my plane crashing. Truthfully, I’m not just scared to fly, I’m scared to die.

Because I love my children. Because I love being a Mother. And because I have SO much to live for since having them.

People usually think my hesitancy to travel since becoming a Mom is about my children. But it’s mostly about me.

I’m not worried about my kids being okay while I am away on a trip. I know they’ll be in the best hands ever. Capable, loving, family hands. Family members who are so in tune with them and their safety & well-being that I don’t think twice about leaving them. I know they’ll be okay.

I just don’t know if I’ll be okay.

And I don’t mean in terms of missing them. Cue all the “Oh you’ll miss them but it will feel good to get away” comments. I know how good it will feel to get away. To have a break. To avoid mom burnout. And of course I will miss them—they’re my babies! All hail FaceTime for making it possible to see their precious faces from halfway across the world. And I’m sorry if seeing Mama & Daddy makes it harder on whoever is taking care of them (shout out to my Mom & Sis!), but this Mama’s gotta see her babies.

As much as I adore my children and just Motherhood in general (I’m a SAHM & think being a Mother is what I was born to do), every time I travel it is so refreshing. It feels good to play hookie. I love connecting with my husband, whether it be for a night out or a week away. It’s nice to have regular conversations instead of the fractured sentences we try to finish every few minutes but never quite do. Also, morning sex.

It’s nice to have a breather but, inevitably, by the end of every trip I am absolutely dying to see them. So yes, I’ll miss them.

[click_to_tweet tweet=”But my anxiety is not about missing my children. It’s about missing out on them.” quote=”But my anxiety is not about missing my children. It’s about missing out on them.” theme=”style7″]

I’m the Mom who doesn’t want to miss a single moment of my kids’ lives. I want to soak up every hug, every snuggle, every little handprint. So the thought of missing all the moments unravels me to my core. It utterly destroys me.

I don’t want my children to grow up without a Mother.

Actually, let me say that differently—I don’t want them to grow up without ME.

Because that’s what I really mean.

Believe it or not, I’m not an anxious person. I’m actually a pretty practical person.

But mostly, I am a feeling person. I have a lot of feelings. About a lot of things. And they aren’t easily ignored.

My fear of flying is one of these feelings.

And that feeling is strong. Crippling even. The “cars are so much more dangerous” argument doesn’t help me at all. The statistics that are completely in my favor don’t make an iota of difference to me. The “airplanes are so safe” facts have zilch effect. The pilot neighbor who has piloted planes his entire life coming over to sit on my porch at my husband’s request to explain how safe flying is doesn’t work for me. (Okay, that one worked a little because I was able to grill him on things like drunk pilots that you read about in the news, etc…but not enough to alleviate my fear). And God Forbid don’t you dare tell me “everything happens for a reason.” Because I’m a firm non-believer in that and I honestly think it is a terrible thing to say to people (more on that in another post).

If a plane crash is in the news, I can’t stop reading about it. I’m almost obsessive, trying to figure out what went wrong, was it human or mechanical error, what could have been done to save the plane and thus everyone in it, etc. My husband says I torture myself by doing that. I clap back that I just want to be knowledgeable about it. He’s not wrong. But neither am I.

When you’re as scared to fly as I am, you worry when they say something’s not working and you worry when they say it’s fixed (because, is it?!).

    I know, it’s completely ridiculous.

C'mon mama scared to fly since becoming a mom wearing life jacket for a cruise
    Safety First, Cruise Style.

When I’m in the airport calmly (on the outside—inside I’m a wad of nerves) waiting to board and I hear the dreaded “Flight XXXX has been delayed,” my entire body tenses. And if it’s for a technical issue—my inner shit just hit the fan. I have conflicting feelings because on the one hand, thank you Jesus that they caught it. But on the other hand, I worry they’ll do a quick bandaid type fix. I get suspicious my HVAC guy might not fix my air unit right. You don’t think I worry about this supposedly expert aviation tech team that knows how to fix all the problems on all the planes all the time?

    I DO.

My husband is a physician. Since I’ve become scared to fly he always suggests that I take Xanax or something to ease my anxiety. My response is always the same: “I want to be alert.”

I know that sounds crazy. But hear me out.

IF something were to happen with our flight, I want to be 100000% on my A game. In the event of an emergency landing, I want to be able to spring into action. If someone has evil intentions, I want to be prepared. I want to know where the exit rows are. And I want to be ready. I don’t want to be hazy. <Insert my husband’s exasperated sigh as I explain this to him—yet again—here.>

I listened to & watched the Flight Attendant Safety Demo intently on my first flight as a junior in college. And I’ve half-heartedly listened since then, but never at full attention (except when Delta had that cheeky video one).

But you know who tunes into the Flight Safety Talk like their life depends on it (because it could)?

Moms who are scared to fly since having kids.

You better believe I want to know if the bottom of my seat is the flotation device, where my closest exit is, and not to worry if my oxygen mask doesn’t inflate because oxygen is still flowing. Tell me more, Plane Safety Gods. I want to know it all.

I assess the people around me. Gauge how they might hold up in a crisis situation. She looks strong. He looks able-bodied. Ooh, he looks weak. She looks too relaxed.

When the “Seat belts fastened” light unexpectedly dings, my mind goes into overdrive. “Does the pilot know something we don’t?” OF COURSE THE PILOT KNOWS SOMETHING I DON’T. The pilot knows a million things I don’t. The physics of flying. Aerodynamics. The weather at the current altitude. Air pockets. The route. To. Name. A. Few.

And no, I don’t want to fly separately from my husband, though I absolutely understand why many couples do that. I get it and it’s honestly probably the smart thing to do. But selfishly, it doesn’t really make me feel any better. In fact that would just layer on the worry because then I’d have to worry about his plane, too. And God I love that man.

But, here’s the clincher. This is where it gets (or I get?) even crazier.

I would be more okay if I had my kids with me on the plane.

    I KNOW IT.  <face palm>

How can I be so scared to fly when my kids aren’t with me but magically unafraid when they are?

pregnant c'mon mama scared to fly since having kids traveling in prague
    5.5 Months Pregnant in Prague

It makes no sense. But it’s the truth.

I’d feel so much more okay if I was sandwiched between my children on every flight, holding their little bodies close and feeling all that love. That seems unusual coming from someone who is so scared to fly. Morbid even. Like “I’m terrified to fly unless my kids are with me.” Wait, what?

I never let myself go this far into it because even grazing past these thoughts crumples me, but for the sake of this post I will delve into it one time and one time only.

If I really break it down I think it’s because it’s a Mother’s instinct to protect her young, especially in an emergency (like the scariest moment of my life when my child choked). And holding my kids close to me & then springing into the Supermom action hero makes me feel safer.

And to go even deeper, I also think it’s because I want to hold them until the very end. My end. And if I’m alone on a flight and something happens, they’re so far away. I can’t hold them and tell them how much Mama loves them until my very last breath.

I’m scared to fly because I don’t want to die.

That’s what it all boils down to. And I know there are a million ways to die, but planes really scare me. Though anything that could take me away from my children, or vice versa, scares me to death.

If you could guarantee me that I’d get to my destination and back home safely, I’d never bat an eye about hopping on a plane and flying across the world. I really do love traveling.

My husband is scared to fly since becoming a parent, too. But he says he doesn’t want to be paralyzed by fear or let it stop us from living our lives.

I remind him he wouldn’t feel that way if we didn’t make it back.

    He agrees.

We traveled a bunch before having children. I traveled 5 months pregnant with my first. We traveled after having our son. I traveled 5 months pregnant with my second. And I’ve traveled since having her. Each time it’s harder and harder. At this point it’s edging near impossible for me.

C'MON MAMA mom scared to fly because she has everything to live for

No trip is worth the risk of not being here for and with my kids. And yet here I am thinking about taking that risk. Sure, I have a wonderful trip to gain. But I have everything to lose. Everything. Putting it like that makes me wonder how I could even consider it. And yet here I am. Considering it.

Year after year, trip after trip. Considering it. Risking it. Everything.

C'mon mama mother with fear of flying since having children snuggling her children
    This is where I belong.

So what do we do? Those of us scared to fly since having children? Do we stay put and never travel again? Or do we take that risk, ignore our fear of flying, and get on the plane?

I’m supposed to fly soon. Very soon.

    And far. Very far.

I bought “Gold Package” travel insurance just in case my babies get sick. Or we get sick. Or in case I just can’t step foot on the plane. (ding ding ding)

Where do we stand on teleporting these days? Sheldon? Elon Musk? Richard Branson? Anybody?

Are you scared to fly since becoming a Mom, too? Tell me in the comments. And if you have any tips for fear of flying, please help a scared Mama out & give me those, too!

  • Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party (Let’s PAWty!)

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party (Let’s PAWty!)

We threw a Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party for my daughter and it was PAWSOME (see what I did there?).

Or maybe I should say a “Rolly and Bingo” Birthday Party because that’s what my kids call it.

If your kids haven’t seen Puppy Dog Pals yet, they’re missing out. Really. It’s one of my kids’ favorite shows of the moment (they’re 3 and 5, for reference). It’s cute, sweet, there’s music & dancing, and there are no villains…with the exception of a bratty little dog named Cupcake who redeems herself every few episodes.

Don’t get me wrong, my son LOVES shows and movies with villains. Anytime we watch something new he asks 3 questions:

    1. Is there a mean?
    2. Does the mean go bye bye?
    3. Does the mean go all the way bye bye?

(Hey, at least he wants the mean to go bye bye. Phew.)

    This post includes affiliate links.

But I have to say it’s refreshing sometimes to just have a happy, cute show without an overload of heavy feelings (I’m talking about one of our other faves, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. We adore that show but sometimes my kids just need to laugh.) OR an overload of villains (I’m looking at you, PJ Masks. My kids love ya but my son gets a little too into whatever Romeo is doing).

So, a Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party it is. Adorable. Fun. Cute. Sweet. And Happy.

My daughter just turned 2 and she was all about a Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party. For my son’s 2nd birthday we had a Daniel Tiger party. Kids’ parties are cute, man. I have to admit.

Since my entire life is basically one big Amazon Prime exhibition, that’s where I turned. Trust me on this—you can pull off a cute party in just a few days. I’ve proven this theory multiple times. (hey, Moms do everything. It’s hard to plan ahead!)

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party Fails & more ideas at the bottom!

    Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party paw print birthday cake

    Paw Print Cake Pan

My fave thing by a landslide was the cake. It was everyone’s favorite part—including my kids! I made it myself using the easiest paw print cake pan ever (seriously, you can’t screw it up). Be sure to load the pan with flour so that it doesn’t stick!

I Used Betty Crocker Cupcake Icing for the white sections & then I used regular Strawberry Icing for the pink sections & just emptied it into a ziplock & cut the tip of the bag off. It worked great. I’m no Martha Stewart, so if I can do it then so can you. This cake mold is amazing & has raised parts for the paw pads so it is super easily to follow the design with icing.

Puppy Dog Pals Vinyl Wall DecalsPink Plates + Napkins Set

The wall decals are AMAZING and we still (over a year later!) have them on our kids’ doors. They are SO cute & big.

If I could do this party over again I’d 1000% get this paw print plate/napkin//balloon set and this tablecloth.

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party Treats

Rice Krispies Treats SHEETSRainbow Star Sprinkles

I was first going to make dog bone shaped sugar cookies. Then I discovered the most amazing Rice Krispies Treats SHEETS (what??!) and I made a bunch of dog bone rice krispies treats using these Dog Bone Cookie Cutters. But we ate them all before the party (*facepalm) and using the small cookie cutters wasn’t the easiest on the rice krispies treats (I think it would work much better with the larger cookie cutters in this set).

So, I ended up just cutting the large sheets into squares and covering them with starfetti sprinkles. The kids LOVED them. And it couldn’t have been easier. Plus, they looked amazing.

But I still was secretly bummed I didn’t have anything shaped like dog bones when that was my whole original plan! If I could do it again I’d prob do a combo of both.

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party Puppy Dog Pals dress

    Pink DressIron-on Transfer Paper

This little dress turned out SO cute! I couldn’t find any Puppy Dog Pals dresses so I found a precious plain one on Amazon and made my own iron on decal (had to pop Keia in there because she is my girl’s fave). I used iron-on transfer paper & just printed the design I wanted, cut it, & transferred it via iron. I’m a big fan of doing this.

This dress is perfect but it runs 1-2 sizes too small (for reference, my daughter was mostly in 2T and the 4T dress was perfect). They have some cute Puppy Dog Pals shirts out there, but 1) I wanted a dress and 2) none of the shirts currently have the new girl dog character Keia. This dress would also work great—just know that it runs huge (like 2 sizes too big). But it’s presh!

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party Puppy Chow

“Puppy Chow” Turtle Chex MixM&M Minis

We used Turtle Chex Mix for “Puppy Chow.” So cute.

Pro tip: I have since learned to always get M&M Minis over the regular size. It takes the choking scare factor out of it and that is worth everything. Kids always gravitate toward the candy. Play it safe & think age appropriately for snacks. Don’t serve known choking hazards to children. My child choked on a piece of candy I gave him & I’ll never get over that terror.

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party Food

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party Food Pup Corn

    “Pup Corn” (Pirate’s Booty)

The “Pup Corn” was a hit (as always!). I used these white cheetos because I happened to already have a bunch on hand…and they’re delicious. But the Pirate’s Booty definitely looks more like popcorn so I’d go that route next time.

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party birthday girl blowing out candle

Large Number Candle Flashing Birthday NumberBig Birthday Candles

I love big candles. They just add so much fun & festivity. These XL number candles are my fave # candles. And my favorite birthday cake/party find for every party & age is without a doubt these big birthday stick candles. They are like XL versions of a classic birthday candle. They make any cake or cupcake look so much more festive. And you can reuse them again & again.

I also love these flashing light numbers that I have discovered since this party (see it in action at my son’s Superhero Birthday Party). They are so fun & add so much to the cakes! It’s not a candle, but it’s perfect as a topper or even just table decor.

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party little girl riding Radio Flyer trike

    Radio Flyer Little Trike

My dad gave this adorable little Trike to my daughter for her 2nd Birthday & it is so adorable. I’d never seen one quite like this. She is 3 now & still loving it. It was such a great birthday gift for this age. (It also comes in the classic red design.)

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party Puppy Dog Pals shirts

    Puppy Dog Pals Unisex T-Shirt

    So cute, huh?

We also had these absolutely adorable Walking Pug Balloons and they were a HUGE hit. I can’t believe I forgot to get a picture! I don’t think I had a chance to because the kids were obsessed with playing with them. They kind of made the party.

Also, get these Removable Vinyl Paw Prints stickers & put them all over the place. The paw prints everywhere add so much. I even put them going up the stairs to the party. The kids loved it. Spring for the vinyl ones. Trust me. They come right up.

Oh, and we used these Little Collar Bracelets as toys/party favors. Cute!

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party FAILS

    1) I should’ve bought Scooby Snacks. Seriously, what was I thinking? And, Scooby Snacks mini bags would be the cutest party favor.

    2) I’d 1000% get this paw print plate/napkin//balloon set and this tablecloth. (I didn’t see these at the time. Love them!)

Puppy Dog Pals Birthday Party Best GIFT IDEA

Get all the Puppy Dog Pals stuffed animals for your kid, or any they don’t have! They are so cute & my kids love them. We have all of these: Rolly Plush ToyBingo Plush ToyKeia Plush ToyHissy Plush Toy  plus this Puppy Dog Pals Mini Figurine Set (Bonus: you could also use these as cake toppers if you do a different style cake!).

    Mission Accomplished.

  • 14 Things Every New Mom Should get Herself

14 Things Every New Mom Should get Herself

New Mom, you need to TREAT YOSELF. Yep I said it.

    And I’ll tell you why.

    Happy Wife, Happy Life.

    Happy Baby, Happy Mama.

We’ve all heard those things before. And they’re ‘things’ because they’re totally true. But here’s another one for you: Happy Mama, Happy EVERYTHING.

    Now THAT’S some truth.

Because basically, Happy Mama = Happy Wife/Life/Baby/Kids/House/Bills/Yard/Laundry Room/Tummies…and the list could go on (& on & on). And a Happy new Mom sets the stage for it all.

It’s no secret that Mamas bring their A game. We make things happen. But you know what else we do? We think about everyone else first.

Especially as we get ready to become a new Mom.

When Motherhood is on the horizon, we go into this remarkable superhuman nesting/preparation/save-and-get-the-world-ready mode. And we forget about ourselves.

We pour every ounce of energy into getting ready to HAVE a baby, but we don’t always think about getting ready to BE a Mama.”

But I’m thinking about you, New Mom. I see you. I was you. I am you.

In all the crazy of getting ready for baby, don’t forget about you. Don’t forget about Mama. Because the day you welcome a child into your arms will be the beginning of the rest of your life. That’s heavy. And while you’re getting the nursery & all the sweet touches ready for baby, throw a little love your own way, too.

You’ll be a new Mom before you know it, and you’ll deserve it.

Trust me on that. You’ll realize just how much you deserve it soon enough.

    This post includes affiliate links.

So I made you a list. A list of things a new Mom should have.

There are a zillion baby registry guides out there, including my baby registry list. And those lists are awesome because a prepared Mama (well, as prepared as you can be for leaving your house alone & coming home with a tiny completely dependent human being) is a more relaxed & happy Mama.

But there are definitely not a zillion new Mom lists out there.

I never came across one in my “getting ready for baby” research. So, here are a few of my favorite things to help make your life happier & easier & more special as you gain the best title in the world by doing something totally superheroine-ish like welcoming a baby into this big, scary, beautiful world.

(I also made you another list of things to do before the baby comes. 10 things. Trust me.)

    C’MON MAMA’s New Mom Necessities

    1. LoveHandle Phone Strap

With 1 baby, I couldn’t do without it. With 2, not a chance. It frees up my hands to hold my babies and groceries and diaper bag etc….which is important because we only have 2 hands (even though everyone seems to think we have 50). It’sin a wordamaze. This little strap keeps me from dropping my phone approximately 243 times a day and it doesn’t stretch out or fall off. And when your baby is napping on you (melt melt melt), this allows you to use your phone one-handed without dropping it (& waking up baby) or fatiguing your hand. It’s a must-have. And better than the little knob thing. Or the loop.

    2. This MAMA necklace

C'MON MAMA wearing a mama necklaceObsessed. I’ve only taken it off maybe 5 times since I got it 5 years ago. It’s perfect. It’s delicate but sturdy, and soldered at the top so it won’t flip upside down. I have the MAMA one in gold. I also love this silver one. Fact: MAMA is my most favorite word in the history of the world. I have a feeling it will be yours, too.

    3. An XL Heating Pad

Turns out I’m an adult now and I get back pain. Boo. Carrying around a 55lb toddler child and 35lb baby toddler (when did they grow up?) will do that to you. This is one of the LARGEST heating pads I could find. I use it every single night, even in the summer. If it breaks, I may or may not cry (I will), and I’ll definitely immediately reorder it.

    4. A Village

When I was pregnant with my first I was reading a “You’re Going to be a Mom” magazine at the OB office & there was a page on “Best Advice for New Moms.” One quote was from a new Mom who had her own Mama come stay for 2 weeks after her baby’s birth & she said it was the best decision she’d ever made. I literally picked up the phone right that second & called my Mama to ask her to come stay with us for 2 weeks once our baby arrived. She said of course she’d be there as much as I needed her. But I was all like “No no no, Mom. I mean I want you to MOVE IN for 2 weeks and not leave.

I got my wish. To have someone there to help us with all the mundane life stuff so we could soak in the precious new baby we created was priceless.

I’m super blessed because I have family all around me so it was possible to have my mom come stay with me. Not everyone has a Mama, not everyone has family, not everyone has backup. I realize that. I’d say to try to find it wherever you canin a best friend, a relative, a neighbor, or even just an awesome babysitter that you find. We all do better with a Village, if we can find one. If you can’t find one, build one.

You don’t win an award for doing this thing called Motherhood and bringing a baby into the world all on your own. Don’t try to prove that you don’t need help. Honestly, if anything, maybe try to prove that you do.

And if you have a spouse, let them be your partner. Don’t try to do it all. Ask for help.

C'MON MAMA new mom take the help

You’re a brand new mom, take whatever you need.

Having a supportive & engaged partner who is as excited about being a parent as you is a wonderful thing. Let them take on some of that responsibility in even the earliest days, because those nitty gritty moments taking care of your newborn are also some of the most important bonding moments. Even the diaper changes. Yes, really. And likewise, be sure to share some of the sweetest moments, too. It can be easy to hog all that love (guilty), but it’s a thousand times better to share it.

Side note: If you don’t have a partner or you don’t have a Village and you’re largely going it alone, I bow down, Mama. Know that you can do this and will hit quite possibly the highest Superhero status there is. You go Mama.

    5. Babysitter Budget

Speaking of backup, start stashing some cash because good babysitters are worth their weight in gold. You need backup. Even if you think you have enough backup in your partner and family and friendstrust meyou’ll want more. And the going rate is steep. Like Mount Everest steep. (I don’t think Mount Everest is actually the steepest mountain, but you get my point.)

    6. Spanx Leggings

Yes, Spanx makes leggings. They work miracles. (They also make jeans. Mind blown, I know. But for now we’ll talk leggings since leggings are basically my Mama uniform.) My favorites are these and these If Amazon is out of stock in your size, fear not, they update inventory all the time. Clearly I’m obsessed. They’re so cute & stylish + comfortable after baby (well maybe give it a month) and they make Mama lookand feelgoooood. These are one of my most holy grail new Mom items (I have 5 pairs, and 5 years later, they’re still rocking their HG status). Bravo Sara Blakely. You done good, girl.

    7. Granny Panties & Unscented Soap

Ahhh, the glamour. But I’m just trying to keep it real. You’ll need/want these after birth if it’s a VD. Go ahead and have them on hand so you don’t have to go to Target and buy some while trying to make your regular cheeky undies work for that hour. (Spoiler alert: They won’t. But not to worry, they will again. Promise.)

    8. A Guilty Pleasure

I was going to say “A Vice” but those are supposed to be “bad” and you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life, Mama. You also don’t need to feel guilty (there is enough mom-shaming to go around already), but “guilty pleasure” is catchy so I’m sticking with it.

Maybe it’s coffee. Maybe it’s reality TV. Maybe it’s a new book series. Maybe it’s a show you can binge on. Maybe it’s exercising. Maybe it’s not exercising. Maybe it’s ice cream. Maybe it’s trash magazines. Maybe it’s a glass of wine. Maybe it’s two. Maybe it’s sleeping. Maybe it’s all the movies you’ve been wanting to see. Maybe it’s sitting down and doing absolutely nothing. Man does that feel good.

    Whatever it is, it’s yours.

Own it and enjoy it. You’ll be surprised how good it feels to have something of your own those first few weeks and even months. Some babies sleep a lot at the beginning. Some babies don’t sleep at all. Same for night. But whether your baby is conked out in the crib or you’re walking him to sleep or holding her so she won’t cry, it’s nice to have your own personal arsenal of entertainment for whenever you want it.

I binged on the first season of This is Us and discovered my love for Closed Captioning in the process. And if you think that show makes you emotional on your best day, imagine being a week postpartum and having all the feels about everything. But I loved it and will always remember pacing the room with my newborn daughter asleep in my arms while laughing & crying with the Pearson family.

I thought I would have no time to myself once I became a Mama, and some days that’s 1000% true. But, the other truth is that some days you actually do get some solid time to yourself (give or take a sleeping baby in tow). When they become mobile, it’s a different story and all bets are off. But I’m still a huge advocate of being selfish with your time to help avoid mom burnout.

new mom gifts time to herself

    9. Amazon Prime Membership

If you don’t have one, shut the front door. No really, shut the door, grab your computer and get one right now. It takes 2 seconds. This. Is. Important. Why? Because all the baby stuff you could ever want is on Amazon. Diapers, wipes, utensils…and yes, even those magical leggings. Sure, you can make a trip to the store to get it all. You can also cook 3 full meals a day. Or you can click a button and have stuff come to you. Make the smart choice. This is one of the most essential things on this whole list. Because Mama’s sanity matters. A lot. You can try it free for 30 days!

    10. A Lighter Heart

C'MON MAMA NEW MOM OUT WITH THE OLD MAKE ROOM IN YOUR HEART

You’ll want this to hold the ridiculously immense love you will feel for this tiny being.

Your new Mom heart will be overflowing approximately 1.2 seconds after you hold your child in your arms for the first time.

Start looking for a way to expand it. I’m currently trying to figure out how to build an addition on mine before it bursts out of my chest.

One of the best ways I’ve found to make a little more room in your heart is to let go of all the old, negative, drama-laden, petty stuff. Toss that aside & you’ll be shocked how much lighter you feel. It turns out that carrying around an actual human inside of you still isn’t as heavy as carrying around baggage.

Out with the old, in with the new. And the new is so damn incredible.

    11. Free Space on Your Phone

You’re going to need it. Because as soon as your baby comes into the world you are going to be obsessed with said baby. And you are going to love documenting all the adorableness from Day 1. I’m not exaggerating that at this exact moment I have 15,595 pictures on my phone. It’s insane, I know. Probably 15,495 of those are pictures of my babies. Videos? I have 1,317. You think you’ll remember all the moments, but you won’t because new moments are happening all the time.

thousands of pictures on C'MON MAMA's iphone
    I wasn’t lying.

I take pictures to keep the memories alive.

Years & years down the road, I know having these pictures will bring me such happiness.

That’s not to say you should get caught up documenting your new life with baby instead of actually living itit’s just to say that you are going to want pictures. Make space on your phone now. You may have an awesome camera. But the truth is, in those spontaneous moments of pure amazingness, you’re not going to have your camera on you. But you’ll probably have your phone.

When he falls asleep on you for the first time, you’re going to want that selfie. When she grabs your finger and doesn’t let go for an hour, you’re going to want that photo. Because pictures are memories. Period. And make the space now so you’ll be ready. Because your heart will sink when you get ready to record their first smile and your phone pops up with a “Not enough available storage” notification. You’ll cry. Trust me.

Note to Spouses (go ahead and show this to them, Mama): When you see the most tender moment between Mama & child, take the picture! We do it for you; you need to do it for us so every picture we have with our child isn’t a selfie. I’ll say it again: Take. The. Picture.

C'MON MAMA new mom take the picture

    12. The Qeepsake App

Download this app now. I LOVE IT. Again, you think you’ll remember all of the extra precious moments. Because how could you forget something so adorable? Well, for starters: New Mom Brain. That’s how. And then on top of that throw in some regular Mom Brain plus exhaustion, life, work, hanger (if you’re anything like me), responsibilities, and more precious moments happening all the while. You’ll think you couldn’t possibly forget the cutest sentence your kid will ever say or the way your newborn stopped wailing when you asked if they were hungry (how does a 2 week old know the word “hungry?”) or when your toddler sleeps with a bath knee pad because he says it’s his life jacket. But you do. You do forget.

Enter my fave baby/kid app: Qeepsake. I tried a few before falling in love with this one. Qeepsake sends you a nightly text message asking you something about your baby that day. You can have it ask you about multiple children on a rotating schedule (one night I get a question about my son, the next night I get a question about my daughter). You can change the frequency & time of the texts, skip a question you don’t love, or just text in your own memories, too. And you can even text pictures. It’s the single best way I’ve found to keep up with all the moments & memories & milestones.

The fact that it’s both text-based & has it’s own app is HUGE. Because we all sit down & check our texts at some point. And you’ll see it right there. If I miss 3 weeks straight, I don’t bat an eye. I just answer whichever questions I want whenever I want.

    *Honorable mention:

On the same note as Qeepsake, we heard about this idea & loved it & are doing it-ish. Get an email address for your child & send emails occasionally. Imagine what a sweet & cool thing that will be for them to have one day. That being said, this still doesn’t take the place of something like Qeepsake because we rarely remember to email our children something. In fact just writing this post made me realize we haven’t even done this for our daughter who is 3 years old. Parent Fail (poor second child). But, we do Qeepsake for both. No, I don’t work for Qeepsake. I just really love and appreciate it. It was created by parents, and you can tell.)

    13. Mom Friends

Don’t worry if you don’t have any yet. You will inevitably meet some. They will become your Tribe. Or at least a subset of it. If you already do have some, don’t be afraid to use them. Fellow Mamas are your secret weapon. For real.

I think other Mamas are the single best resource any Mamaand especially a New Momcan have.

I absolutely wore my Mama friends out with questions on everything from my baby registry to when I’m supposed to do what, and of course lots of calls & texts asking the New Mom rite-of-passage question: “Is this normal?”

    new mom stroller brigade
Mommy Stroller Brigade (I’m the far right Mama)

And don’t feel bad about it. Other Mamas want to help you. Plus, what goes around comes around, and you will be the one dishing out advice in no time.

For those of you lucky ones like myself with your own Mama still in the beautiful picture, don’t forget that:

    1) They’ve been there.

    2) They’ve done that.

    3) If you think you turned out alright then that should be reassurance that they know this drill. (If you turned out terribly then we may need to have a longer conversation.) And almost no one’s going to be as invested in the welfare of your baby as your own parent. Not even just because it’s their baby’s baby, but because it’s also their Grand. Mama Bear instinct & ferocity is real. You know who else has that? A Grand Bear.

    14. Perspective

Everything is a short stage. Sometimes you’re glad it’s short and sometimes you’re sad it’s short. When you’re struggling and your baby is up all night for a week straight, the next week he might be sleeping through the night. Wanting to be constantly held one week, feeling completely independent the next. Fussing because teeth are coming in one week, the next week you’re staring at her adorable toothy grin. Your house might be messy & there might be little child handprints everywhere today, but soon enough that will change. And you’ll miss it.

    It goes fast.

    Too fast.

The hard moments can seem slow and the easy amazing moments can seem fast. It’s bittersweet and heartbreaking and fantastic at the same time.

    That’s Motherhood.

Welcome to the best hood in the world, New Mom.

  • An Epic Superhero Birthday Party

    An Epic Superhero Birthday Party

My son is obsessed with all things Superhero, so a Superhero Birthday Party was a no-brainer.

Being a Boymom is fun. (I’m also a Girlmom. I get the best of both worlds). I’ve never in my life known as much about Superheroes as I do at this point in time. I can talk heroes, villains, specific powers, plot points—you name it. My son lives & breathes Superheroes & this was a BIG birthday for him—a whole hand! 5!

So, I went all in & we had the coolest Superhero Birthday Party ever (according to the sea of 5 year old boys & girls…and the parents, if I’m being honest.)

He has a special affinity for the Avengers and all the Marvel superhero characters, so this party was an Avengers Birthday Party. But, you could use the ideas for any Superheroes your kiddo is into.

As always, I turned to Amazon Prime. So no worries, Mama, you can throw an epic Superhero Party together quickly—in two days to be exact.

This Superhero Birthday Party was a total (HULK) SMASH. It was SUPER. (see what I did there?) And b

For our Super Mom & Super Dad costumes (& for the custom H on my daughter’s costume), I used iron-on transfer paper & just printed the design I wanted, cut it, & transferred it via iron. Be sure to get the iron-on paper made for dark materials linked above—the one for light fabrics won’t work! I ironed “Super Mom” & “Super Dad” decals on the front of our costumes (literally just covered up the Superman emblem) & on our capes. SO CUTE!!!

(We actually had a “Super Baby” Birthday Party when my now 5 year old son turned 1 & I made these costumes then. They’ve held up for 4+ years! See throwback pic below.)

    Superhero Birthday Party balloon

    Giant Spiderman Balloon

This thing is HUGE & it was a HUGE hit! The kids went wild over it. We blew it up with the little straw it comes with so it would be a “walking” balloon as opposed to a floating helium balloon. You could do it either way, but it was so fun to have Spidey down on the ground for everyone to interact with!

    Completely life-sized. So fun.

Superhero Birthday Party games hulk smash game

The HULK SMASH game was the (first) highlight of the party. The kids had a BLAST with this! They couldn’t get enough & it was SO easy to put together! All you need are the cones & gloves (linked below!) & then just let them go wild like the HULK would. Superhero Birthday Party hulk smash game

We did a Spidey Web activity where all the kids grabbed silly string aka Spidey Webs & Dad put on a robber mask to play the villain. Then they all went after him. THIS was the (second) highlight of the party. IT WAS SO FUN & CUTE.

    Avengers Cake Topper

We needed a huge cake for the birthday party (because LBH, I wanted enough for the parents, too!) & no local store had an Avengers Superhero Birthday cake. So, I bought this Avengers Cake Topper & it was perfect. The kids LOVED it. And, it’s sugar so it tasted just like the rest of the cake!

(If you need a custom/larger size than the one I linked above (it’s 8×10 & fits 9×13 sheet cake perfectly), check out this Avengers Cake Topper on Etsy that comes in multiple size options.)

My son has a special love for Captain America (is it obvious?) so I went with this 50 pack of flag plates that mimic Captain America’s shield. He loved them & they were super cheap. But, I also got these Avengers plates for his family & school bday parties.)

    Superhero Birthday Party Party Favor

    Superhero Slap Bracelets

We had Superhero Slap Bracelets as the party favors & the kids ended up having a ball with these. They were so much cuter than they look in the picture & had all the fave Superhero logos!

And then for our own little family Superhero Birthday cake, we had a smaller but equally as awesome cake!

    Superhero Birthday Party cake

Flashing Birthday NumberBig Birthday CandlesComic Book Cupcake Toppers

My fave birthday cake/party find for every party & age is without a doubt these big birthday candles. They are like XL versions of a classic birthday candle. They make any cake or cupcake look so much more festive. And you can reuse them again & again.

The flashing 5 light was so fun & added so much to the cakes! We used it on the Superhero Birthday Party huge sheet cake and the smaller, delicious cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes. It comes in #s 1-9. It’s not a candle, but it’s perfect as a topper or even just table decor.

This Superhero Birthday Party turned out to be the most fun kid’s birthday party I’ve ever had (or been to!). It was adorable, exciting & original…and the kids had a BALL!

It was also super easy to put together the 2 fun party activities—the HULK smash & the silly string Spider Web game were the crowd favorites for sure! I usually hesitate to do any kind of “organized game” at parties because that really just means more work for Mama, but this was like the opposite. The kids just got to go crazy with it & I’m so glad I did them because I think they totally made the whole party.

We also had a big box full of extra Superhero masks & capes for all the kids. I forgot to snap a picture but it was great to have out for the kids who didn’t come in costume. The kids had a field day picking their “look.”

Another fun addition to a Superhero Birthday Party would be a piñata! We didn’t do one because although there are a ton of awesome Superhero piñatas, I couldn’t find a villain one & my son would not have wanted to destroy one of his beloved Avengers heroes. (Is anyone else’s kid like this?) BUT, had I been able to find a Thanos or Electro piñata, he would’ve gone nuts!

Oh, and don’t forget this Avengers Balloon Set! It was perfect & the shield balloon is HUGE! Also, it’s such a great price for what you get! We had our Superhero Birthday Party at the local park & this balloon set was the perfect way to show guests where to go.

    Epic Superhero Birthday Party? Check.

Because we all know who the real Superheroes are. (ahem, I’m talking about us Moms.)

  • The Sweetest Storybook Baby Shower

    The Sweetest Storybook Baby Shower

I threw a Storybook Baby Shower for my sister who was expecting her first child.

Even though I hosted it & am therefore biased, I have to say it was my favorite baby shower I’ve ever been to. And not just because I was celebrating my sister (though that was the icing on the very delicious little cakes!).

A Storybook Baby Shower is just about the sweetest theme ever for a little one on the way.

    And here’s why:

It’s perfect for a little boy or girl…or surprise. And if the parents like books—Bonus! My sister is a book lover and an avid reader. Always has been. And her husband (my college roomie, but that’s a whole other story…) is a book lover, too. So, a Storybook Baby Shower was the perfect way to celebrate their baby on the way.

Plus, reading stories & books to your kids becomes one of the most special things you do in those early years. It’s the stuff childhood is made of.

I’m not one to usually obsess about parties & baby showers & every detail being perfect, but for some reason throwing a baby shower for my sister turned me into a full on Martha Stewart Pinterest Maven. My sis is the best sister, the best friend, & the best Aunt…and has done SO much for my kids & me since I became a Mama. So of course, I wanted to do something perfect for her.

And I think we did just that with this Storybook Baby Shower.

Below is everything you need to throw the perfect Storybook Baby Shower—pictures, decor, deets, links & sourcesyou name it!

Oh, and yes, her baby girl has arrived and they’re living Happily Ever After.

    The End.

You can even add Personalized Pages to make the book extra special. I chose to add personalized pages for my children’s names since they’re the baby’s cousins & also for my sister’s dogs. You can personalize a page for each family member—even your pets!

These little favors were such a hit with the guests! Cute & yummy & on theme = a total win. And I loved that these little bags were self-sealing. I printed my own labels to put on them but you could also leave them blank & just put a little sign saying “Bookworms” next to them.

    storybook baby shower invitations

There are countless Storybook Baby Shower invitations on Etsy, but I couldn’t resist designing my own (my sis & I used to have a stationery design company)! I added gold washi tape to make a “book binding” and I used a “This book belongs to” stamp for the front of the envelopes to the left of the Guest Address. The stamp was such a cute touch! They turned out adorable!

I also LOVED the idea of “building baby’s library!” We had the guests bring a book instead of a card & it was so fun & special to see everyone’s favorite children’s books.

(If you’re interesting in buying my invitation template [it’s a digital download/print at home], drop me a comment below or shoot me an email at mama@cmonmama [dot] com.)

This Storybook Baby Shower turned out sweeter & more fun than I ever could have imagined!

Every single thing was a hitwith my sister, her husband, and all the guests!

The decor was super easy because we just put all the classic storybooks we had on hand on display all over the place! People loved walking around & looking at the books. The only thing we bought was that sweet gold baby balloon and a couple of books (which doubled as great gifts)!

The ABC coloring book pages were so fun & gave an interactive element without doing a full-on game. Guests could color at their leisure which made it relaxed & fun.

The food was wonderful & so on point. Though we opted not to do a The Very Hungry Caterpillar fruit tray simply because we had enough food, that would be an amazing (& adorable!) addition!

I’m not going to lie, if I was having another baby I would want this exact same Storybook Baby Shower thrown for me! It was just too perfect.

  • The ONLY Baby Gear & Baby Registry List You Need

The ONLY Baby Gear & Baby Registry List You Need

    Baby Gear.

I’ve been right where you are. Scouring the internet for all the baby gear I will need. Or think I will need. The truth is, when I was pregnant with my first I didn’t know where the heck to even start. So I did what any resourceful person who wants to be informed does: I googled “baby gear.”

I’d say being an avid “researcher” is one of my strengths and weaknesses. A strength because I make really informed decisions. And a weakness because I do not make a decision quickly. I spent hours upon hours reading up on things & researching the “best baby gear.” It turns out there are about a million “baby gear lists” out there. And I’m about to throw you one more. I did all the research so you don’t have to.

With two children and 5+ years into Motherhood, I can definitely say that my greatest resource on everything related to baby gear & baby registry & babies & kids & Momming is…other Mamas. Why? Because we’re living it all day every day. We know stuff. And we keep it real.

So here is me being that fellow Mama to you.

This list isn’t to overwhelm you. This list is to hopefully make it easy on you by putting every single thing you need in ONE place.

    This post includes affiliate links.

And, I can’t recommend doing your baby registry through Amazon highly enough. It’s the easiest way to register for all the things you love & want–easy for you & easy for your friends & family (& baby shower guests) to get you what you want! Amazon has everythinggg, you get 90 day returns on baby registry items, you can add things to your registry via the mobile app, & the best part is after your baby shower you can just click & buy every single thing you still need on your registry list…at a 15% completion discount! (10% if you don’t have Amazon Prime…which you’re gonna need as a new Mom. Trust me.) I did my registry through Amazon a few years ago & my currently pregnant sister just did hers through Amazon, too! Amazon FTW, yet again. Click here to start your own Amazon Baby Registry!

Without further adieu, my Baby Gear Must-Haves…that you won’t find on every other list.

(Of course, some of it’s on other lists, because there are universal no-brainer baby gear items that I can’t leave off). But a lot of baby gear items on this list are things I never saw on any list but learned about from my fellow Mamas or my own trial & error.

I’m going to put this in order of age(ish).

BABY GEAR FOR THE LITTLEST BABIES

All the things you need for that precious new babe.

Baby Gear: Sleeping + Napping + Lounging

Baby laying on a Pello Lounger best Baby Gear must-have
    Netflix & Chill

Boppy Lounger: Both babies hung out on this every single day for the first 4 months, starting on Day 1. We loved it. You can wash it in a regular washer (insert praise hands emoji here). Anything you can use daily for 4 months straight with a newborn is a W-I-N. See below for another version.

Pello: This is similar to the Boppy lounger. It’s basically a more $$$ version but it lasts longer age-wise. When they get older they can still fit in this and lounge to drink their bottles, watch shows, etc.

Swing: Some babies love them, some babies hate them. The swing gave both my babies 4 hour naps for months on end so this Mama is Team Swing.

Playmat: Babies love these. And when they’re teeny tiny, they can still lay on it & just look…and doze off.

[click_to_tweet tweet=”My Momming Philosophy from the get-go—especially in those earliest days—is to take it one day at a time and if something works right now, don’t question it—just roll with it. And maybe rejoice. ” quote=”My Momming Philosophy from the get-go—especially in those earliest days—is to take it one day at a time and if something works right now, don’t question it—just roll with it. And maybe rejoice. ” theme=”style6″]

Crib: Go ahead and spring for the convertible rails. It will make it a breeze when you need to convert. Plus, you will be wishing you had gotten them from the start when you go to the buy them because you need them & they’re discontinued (this has happened to many Mamas I know). We have this one & have loved it. We converted it to a full bed for my son’s “big boy” bed. Also, I LOVE this one & would get it if I were having another baby!

Crib Sheets: Man oh man I love these! Zip the top part on & off in 5 seconds! Crib mattresses fit very snugly into the crib so this makes changing the sheets a breeze! Get 1 or 2 extra top sheets & you’re good to go—or get one of these sets with extra top sheets included. I’ve used these for 5+ years. They hold up.

Crib Mattress: I love this crib mattress with built-in water resistance. The reviews speak loudly.

Blankets: I do love muslin blankets, especially the bamboo muslin ones. Aden & Anais and Little Unicorn are my faves—they both have super soft ones with great designs. They’re breathable (read: safer) and my son still slept with those blankets at 4 years old. *These doubled as my nursing cover-ups.

Dohm Sound Machine: We have one in every single room in the house now, along with this portable one for travel. Babies really do like white noise. And what babies like, babies get…because that’s ultimately good for Mama & her sleep + sanity. I love the simplicity of the Dohm machines. Baby gear must-have for sure.

Baby Monitor: I finally have found a non-WiFI baby monitor that I can RAVE about!!!!! It only took me 5+ years to find one that I could wholeheartedly recommend! We’ve used a Motorola for the past 5 years & it totally got the job done, but the screen was small, the battery ran out constantly, & the resolution wasn’t great. Still though, it did the job.

BUT I have finally upgraded our monitor sitch and am THRILLED with my choice! This VAVA monitor is amazing — killer range, great battery life, toggles between 2 (or more) cameras, and has the BIGGEST screen with such amazing clarity! Hooray!

For a long time I’ve thought about switching to  a WiFi one so we could see our babies & what’s going on when we’re out or away. I’ve spent hours reading reviews & researching them. But, our internet connection is often very spotty. And also, I’m a little freaked out by the whole “are those WiFi waves safe being that directly around my baby all night long” debate. Yes, we have WiFi running through our whole house so those EMF waves are already there. But, they’re not pointing straight at my baby’s precious brain while she sleeps. Or maybe they are. I have no idea. If I were to get a WIFI monitor, ArloBaby, Nanit, & iBaby all get great reviews.

Night Lights: This one is adorable, soft & just the right brightness for those nighttime diaper changes. And as they get older they love to play with it. And, both my kids LOVE this one (my 5 year old still does!) that comes in a turtle & a bunch of other cute designs. It’s not enough light for diaper changes—it’s more something they love to look at because it projects stars on the ceiling.

Baby's hand next to best baby gear angel dear lovey
    Loveys become sweet little sidekicks

Blackout curtains/shades: Wait for the first Daylight Savings Time to hit and you’ll be sorry (as I was). You’ll love having a consistently dark room for naptime & bedtime…and your baby will, too. When DST hits and it doesn’t get dark until 9:00pm, you’ll be desperately trying to drape towels & blankets over all the windows (spoiler: that doesn’t work). I tried about 17 different blackout options (thank gosh for Bed Bath & Beyond & their easy returns!). I had 2 requirements when picking some: 1) that they actually do blackout the room (weirdly most don’t) and 2) no strings or cords (strangulation hazard). These shades and these curtains are hallelujah-worthy. They look great & are effective.

Loveys: A friend gave us an Angel Dear lovey for our son’s birth and told us it was their daughter’s favorite style lovey ever. This was the first thing we ever let him sleep with and he adored it. It definitely brought him comfort, and the same has held true for our daughter. These loveys are perfect & one of my fave baby gear items. The way children adore their loveys is about the sweetest thing. (Side note: We didn’t put anything—and I mean anything—in the crib with our children until they were a year old, not even this lovey. I’m only putting it in this “littlest baby gear” section because they are fun to pick out and have in the nursery for when they are born.)

Swaddle: If your baby needs a swaddle, MiracleBlanket worked wonders for us with our son. Our daughter didn’t like to be swaddled. They come into this world with their own little personalities, just you wait and see.

    Baby Gear: Breastfeeding

Baby Gear & Baby Registry Must-Haves

Nursing/Breastfeeding Pump: Check with your insurance. With mine, insurance covered it 100%. I believe it was a piece of legislation passed during the Obama era. I’m not sure if it’s still in place or not, but check on it. I got to get a pimp pump: The Medela Pump in Style. I picked the tote one & it lasted me through 2 babies & a combined almost 3 years of pumping. BUT, if I could do it over again I’d get the backpack style because I can see how that would be so handy. Oh, and definitely get this pumping bra.

My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow: I loved this thing so much, especially with my first. Tried both this one & the Boppy one but the fact that this one buckles around you is a game changer. You can walk around with it on & if baby falls asleep you have arm support. It’s amaze. My hubby even used to wear it to give the babies their bottles when they were little because it helped support their delicate heads…and his big Daddy arms.

Bottle & Pump Sterilizing: Get the microwave sterilizer bags. Hallelujah for the the easiness of these things!

Bottles: Every baby likes different bottles. Hold off on getting a ton until you see what works for your baby. Then load up. (Mine loved the Playtex VentAire bottles with the Naturalatch nipple since I was breastfeeding. They come in clear, pink & blue + 2 different sizes.)

Drying Rack: Love it, still use it 5+ years later for sippy cups (& wine glasses if I’m being honest). These little trees are perfect for drying bottle & pump parts…and later for sippy cup parts.

Burp cloths: These burp cloths are cute & absorbent = exactly what you need.

I used the muslin swaddle blankets as a cover up when nursing in public because I always had them with me anyways.

Baby Gear: Diapers & Diaper Changes

Backpack Diaper Bag: When I was registering for my first, I asked my Mama if she thought a backpack or regular diaper bag would be better. She said backpack because it would free up my hands & be so easy to throw on. I didn’t listen. (When will I learn?) I quickly realized how much better a backpack diaper bag would be when I was trying to juggle all the things in my armsincluding a living being. So I researched (of course). Having a diaper bag backpack is awesome. I love to wear it. My husband loves to wear it. It is SO easy. Tons of storage & zipper pockets, plus comfortable to wear & free hands = AMEN to that.

Here are my 3 fave diaper backpacks: This smart one (love the wide top), this multi-pocket one (I’m a total sucker for all the compartments/pockets), & this quilted one (love that it can smush down/be crammed in the stroller).

Diaper Rash Cream: Triple Paste FTW! Recommended by our Pediatrician & man oh man does this stuff work wonders! GET IT. 2nd kind we use is Aquaphor. Aquaphor is awesome for creating a barrier so the poop doesn’t just sit right on that delicate skin. If your baby always poops during the night or nap, Aquaphor before bed is great. Triple paste for when they are red from the poop. Both of these work wonders. My kids actually request “clear” or “white” whenever they feel irritated. (If you ever get a crazy terrible diaper rash going—and this can happen (I had no idea how bad it could really be)—comment below & I’ll send you the big guns we used to get it under control!

Diaper Pail: Ubbi is amaze. Keeps the stink in in a big way. Hits you in the face when you open it, but I’m cool with it since it keeps it so contained. Uses regular trash bags = one less extra thing to buy + way cheaper. (I have 3 of these so I obviously think they work)

My fave diapers for Newborns/Babies are Pampers Swaddlers. My fave wipes that I still use for everything under the sun to this day are these Huggies ones.

Changing Pad & Changing Pad Cover – done & done.

This soft diaper caddy is amazing for the car or home. I keep mine in my car (I have 2!) but it’d work great at home for having your diaper change supplies easy to move from room to room. (Bonus: when your kids outgrow diapers, it makes a wonderful car caddy for books & snacks, toys, etc.!)

Disposable Changing Pads: These are so handy to keep in the diaper bag & the car…and even around your house. You just toss these so you never have to worry about the blowout getting on anything you have to wash.

    Baby Gear: On the Move

Car Seat: We had the Chicco Keyfit 30 & loved it. Super easy. There are a million different options, though, and you really can’t go wrong. (Now when it comes time for convertible toddler seats, that’s a different story. Hint: get a Britax Clicktight seat.)

*Don’t use a seat protector under your car seat (unless explicitly approved by the car seat manufacturer). It can compromise the safety of your seat and child.

Car Seat Mirror: This classic one or this one if you want a tan one.

Strollers: For infants, get a caddy stroller like this universal one or one of these Chicco caddy strollers (if you’re going with a Chicco infant seat): KeyFit Caddy or Shuttle Frame. Trust me on this. A caddy stroller is holy grail baby gear status for me. It’s basically a frame stroller that your infant seat pops in & out of. Talk about easy breezy. Lightweight, fits easily in your car, if baby is asleep you don’t have to wake him or her up to use the stroller; you just snap the infant car seat in & out.

Father pushing baby in best Baby Gear Caddy Stroller
Daddy on Duty (with the KeyFit Caddy Stroller)

And when they outgrow their infant seat, there are a million choices. I wore mine a lot (see below) so after they outgrew their infant seat I actually didn’t use a stroller a ton when I was out & about. But, at home I had the BOB and wouldn’t want to do without it. If you live anywhere that you can go on a walk, get the BOB, get the infant seat adapter for your car seat, & enjoy that fresh air. When they’re older get the snack tray.

The BOB is $$$ upfront, no question. But it’s so well-made, can endure tremendous wear & tear, & the re-sale value is great (just look on your local Facebook Mom Swap). Like I said, I kept mine at home, but I have lots of friends who keep theirs in the car. (*I loved my BOB so much that when I had my second child one of the first—and biggest—purchases I made was the Double BOB. Love it just as much.)

Stroller Organizer: Love this one because it has a lot more space than some yet isn’t too bulky.

Universal Stroller Cup Holder: GET THIS NOW. It will fit any stroller, is super sturdy, & won’t spill your drink like the soft organizer above does. Also, the cup holders that come most strollers are shallow & your drink wobbles/spills the whole time.

Stroller fan: Love this one, holds up well in all weather.

Carriers: I L-O-V-E wearing my babies!!! LOVE. Do it while you can. Because before you’re ready they will be too big and you won’t be able to anymore. For the teeny tiny newborns: this is so easy. For when they get a little bigger, loved my Tula. Not going to lie, mainly got it for the design options. You can’t wear your baby facing out with this one. But truth be told I never wanted to do that—I wanted to hold them close to me. They have the rest of their lives to face out and see the world, I wanted to wear them facing me like a hug.

*NOTE: My son has been off the charts in height & weight since he was about a month. So he has always outgrown things by size very quickly. When he outgrew the Tula I was crushed but I found this LILLEBaby for toddlers that I’m obsessed with. It’s actually the most comfortable thing ever because it has killer lumbar support (turns out I need that now. But I’m still young & cool, right? Right.). My son is over 4 feet & 50lbs and I wear him super duper comfortably. And he still loves when I do. It goes up to 65 lbs & you can do backpack carry which is fun when they’re a little older. Now that I know how comfy the LILLEBaby is with that awesome lumbar support, if I had to do it again I think I’d get this LilleBaby carrier over my Tula. Because back pain is real, Mama.

Nothing to see here but smiles

NoseFrida: Get it. Looks weird. Sounds weird. Actually is a little weird. But it’s crazy effective. It works. I mean like really, really, really works. Didn’t get it with my first. Thought I didn’t need it. I thought wrong. Loved having it with my second.

Nail Clippers: I didn’t use any when my babies were really little. Because their nails are so flimsy & you can easily just bite them off. Yep, I said it. And I did it. It works. BUT, when they’re a little older, you need a good nail clipper. I tried a few ones that were just crap. Sucked it up & paid more for this one and it’s the bomb.com. Some of the cheaper ones don’t cut the nail all the way & it gets kind of stuck & then you pull it trying to get it & it goes too deep & your baby cries & then they’re traumatized & clipping their nails becomes a huge hassle. But this pair works so well, so easily, that you’re done before they even really realize you started. WIN. I use it on my 2 & 5 year old.

Thermometer: This ear & forehead thermometer makes it a breeze. Similar to what they use in the doctor’s office.

Baby Qtips: These are amazing & have a larger but tapered end so they can’t go too far in the ear.

Teethers: I have 2 simple, cheap faves. This one & this one.

Hangers: I love these little basic plastic ones. I bought the velvet ones first because I love those in my own closet, but it was hard to get all the little baby clothes off the hangers because the neck holes are so small. So I switched to the plastic ones & never looked back.

Baby Laundry Detergent: Dreft has that dreamy baby smell + safe for their super delicate skin! (*Also, I’d recommend dropping the dryer sheets & switching to these wool dryer balls. Gotta protect those babes when we can.)

    Baby Gear: Bath

Infant Bathtub: Looooved this one. Nowhere for mold to grow = added bonus! For when they can sit up, get this adorable duck one! Bonus: the duck tub makes for the cutest photo-ops ever.

I LOVE this bath caddy/toy holder! (Bonus: it doubles as a sibling separator later when you have 2 kids & they both want to be by the toys!)

Bath Accessories: Hooded towels, washcloths, spout cover to protect their little heads from bumps, fave shampoo/body wash, bubble bath, rinsing cup, drain cover. (*Don’t get the fleece-y towels. Yes, they’re so soft but they don’t absorb a thing. Stick with the regular terry cloth/cotton ones.)

BABY GEAR FOR SLIGHTLY BIGGER BABIES & TODDLERS (once they can hold their heads up and/or eat, etc.)

Your baby is growing up, Mama. Hold on tight. It’s going to be a beautifully bumpy ride.

    Baby Gear: Eating

2 children sitting in best baby gear Ikea High Chairs
    IKEA FTW.

High Chair: This one. Love it. Would get it a million times over. Funny story—for whatever reason, my mother in law was very eager for me to pick out a high chair so she could get it for us. She had seen her niece’s daughter sit in her high chair and eat cheerios while watching Sesame Street once and that vision just really stuck with her. So when I picked this one she was so disappointed. “But there’s no cushion and it’s not even soft.” I said “I know, that’s exactly why I want it!” No cushions to keep clean, no crevices to try to reach = perfection! We didn’t see it the same way, ha. I got a second one for my daughter because my (giant) son sat in his until he was 3.5.

Also, these are SO cute to decorate for birthdays. Just saying.

Portable High Chair: The Inglesina fast chair. One of my favorite baby gear items EVER. EVERRRR. Seriously, buy it now. Babies can sit up far before they really fit in the restaurant high chairs. The problem is that while they can sit up in those, they are so low down that it’s too easy for them to bang their mouth or chin on the table. This chair is super portable, super easy, works on almost all tables, & puts the baby up at the right level. We’ve used ours for over 4 years & through two children. We don’t leave the house without it. (Side note: also easy to take with you or keep at Grandmom’s house if they don’t want/need a permanent high chair out.) I’d say this one is a baby gear must.

Bibs: These are lightweight & so easy to wear & clean. Win win win. (I keep a couple in my diaper bag still to this day for when we eat messy stuff while out & about…and my kids are 2.5 & 5.)

C'MON MAMA best baby gear picnic table
    The picnic table in action.

Cups: These are the only truly spill proof/leakproof cups I’ve found. All of them claim to be. But they are not. Many of them may not leak with the most gentle use ever, but we’re talking about toddlers. And little kids. Traditionally not the most gentle beings. Their cups drop (or, ahem, are thrown) like 20x a day. Cups that can go through that & not leak are few & far between. Plus they have a bunch of different sizes as they grow. (Also, all these cups fit so well in car seat cupholders & diaper bag side pockets.) My 5 year old still uses these.

If you want a sippy spout, then I love these. But we don’t take these in the car because they don’t fit in the cupholders & aren’t leakproof. These are our “at home” cups.

*For babies/kiddies going to daycare/preschool, these InchBug labels are awesome. I use the adhesive ones & they stay on in the dishwasher (yay!). People love the band ones, too.

Place mats: For eating out, these place mats qualify as holy grail baby gear. Forget the silicone ones you have to wash. We’re trying to make less work for you, Mama. (Just recycle some extra stuff and you won’t feel bad about using these.) They’re amaze and keep your baby eating on a clean surface at a restaurant. Because tables are dirtyyy, yall. I used to be a server. I know.

(*And while we’re talking babies & food & safety, check out this article about my child choking on a peanut M&M. It was the scariest moment of my life.)

Baby Gear: Confinement. Sometimes you just need your kids to be confined. Embrace it.

Baby napping in best baby gear Jumperoo
This only happened once but it was the most hilarious & amazing nap

Jumperoo: Babies love these. And so does this Mama because it keeps my baby entertained and safe. Starting around 6 months. I put both mine in it until they were 18 months old when I need them to be contained. Embrace it. Embrace the color and the baby-ness of it. Yall know how I feel about baby-looking baby things. (Hint: I’m down with them.)

GoPod: Awesome to have for outdoor hanging, beach, vacations, picnics, etc. Or just so you can take a shower. Super portable, keeps them confined which is often times exactly what you need.

Swing: the older baby/toddler version. Great for a porch or tree. Kids LOVE to swing. (my 1st kid used to nap sitting up in this swing for a few hours, no lie)

Pack ‘n Play: One of the famous baby gear items. I debated whether to put this at the very top in the “Newborn Sleep” section or here, because it’s perfect for both. A Pack ‘n Play is essentially a travel crib. I never used it as a crib in my home but many of my Mama friends used it as a second crib for naps, etc. or when baby is in their room (I used a Rock ‘n Play when they slept in my room). We used it as a playpen/place to confine our babies whether it be laying there or playing in there as they got older. And when you travel to a hotel or the Grands’ house, this thing is key (or they can have one of their own at their house in lieu of a crib).

BUT, for true sleeping, I recommend adding this mattress & this padded sheet to make it not feel like baby is sleeping on a flat rock. (Hack: put this soft mattress on top of the hard mattress it comes with & then put the padded fitted sheet around the whole thing. Super secure that way. And I wouldn’t do this for newborns, only for older babies (too soft for newbies)).

Play Yard/Play Pen: Back in the day, they used to be called playpens. You probably spent some time in one just like I did. This is the most similar to what used to be around; it has a built-in floor/bottom & mesh sides. This is what I have and it works great over our own floor/rug/mat (it comes in multicolor & tan). There are benefits to both types. The former gives you a solid/clean bottom (especially good for outside). The latter gives more space to play (and can get rained on outside). Take your pick, but just know that once baby starts moving, you may will want a safe area to confine her to. So you can bathe. And eat. And pee. Mobility is a game-changer.

Baby Gear: I’m a Big Kid Now

You know that whole “the days are long but the years are short” thing everyone tells you? Yeah…they’re right.

Little girl standing in the best baby gear Little Helper Kitchen Tower
    Little Helper Kitchen Tower

A Kitchen Tower/Stool: These things are so cool. They provide the perfect place to let your toddler/kid stand & be part of the action. They can help cook, eat at the counter with you (if you’re like me & usually eat standing up while unloading & loading the dishwasher), color & paint, drum on the counter, play in the sink, watch you cook, etc. And it keeps them safe & confined the whole time. I have the Little Helper FunPod which is currently unavailable, but my runner up fave is easily this one.

These little towers are a great way to let your little one be part of the daily stuff with you. Also, my 5 year old 50lb son still loves to get in ours to cook. My 2.5 year daughter loves to snack & hang out in it when I’m in the kitchen. And I put her in it when we paint at the easel, because lbh, a 2 year old is not the best at self-control…especially when it comes to paint.

Bike Seat: We’ve loved this one (& we tried 3 different ones before settling on this one). Loved it so much that when our kid outgrew it we got him the larger one. Only downside is I wish it had a 5 point harness because sometimes the straps slip down, but overall love these seats! We didn’t use this until 10 months. (*Helmets are life. Don’t forget that.)

Bike Trailer: This one is wonderful if you plan on having two children at any point. Or even if you don’t (one child can ride it in, too.) It has the biggest weight capacity we could find, which is important when your 5 year old weighs 53 lbs! In other words, you’ll be able to use this for a looong time. We’re obsessed with it. Also, it’s super easy to take on & off your bike.

Pottery Barn Anywhere Chair: Worth the hype. They’re adorable, so comfortable, the kids think it’s the coolest thing to have their own chair. And it’s so cute to see them sitting in them & chilling like the precious little villains they are. Get the standard size. The “my first” one is tiny and though I’ve never seen the oversized one in person, my son is enormous for his age and the standard one has been perfect. We got them at around a year old for both kids.

Kid Picnic Table: This could be in the food or activity category because this thing is awesome. So easy to clean. Folds up in a breeze (though we leave ours out 24/7). Perfect table for tea parties (or coffee parties if you live in my house), coloring, play-doh, and actual eating. Weatherproof, too, so you can keep it outside. We’ve had it for several years and use it every day. It’s not often you find an item with a nearly perfect 5 Star rating on Amazon.

    Baby Gear: Baby-Proofing

This goes beyond Baby Gear. Baby-proofing is totally it’s own thing. I have a whole post about it. But here’s a preview: I’m not “less is more” on the baby-proofing. I’m “more is more.” Because the more secure & safe my house is the less I have to worry and the more I can let my kids play freely, which helps Mama have a minute to sit down. Win win win win win. (If you’re dying for some C’MON MAMA approved baby-proofing gear, go to my Baby-Proofing list.)

There you have it. C’MON MAMA’s Baby Gear Must-Haves. Congrats, Mama. You’ve done all the legwork. Now, enjoy the ride.
